Let's cut to the chase:
Ruger SR-22
You may know that my wife (who has tolerated the shooting without any real interest) recently surprised me by taking NRA Basic Pistol, and plans to get her Carry Permit. She has had two previous surprises for me in the past 35 years, at least in those I was an unwitting (but willing) participant .
Today we were out engaging in HER favorite pastime (shopping), and on the way home we indulged in my favorite pastime (visiting the Gun Shop). As we walked through, she started talking about her first gun, and I told her that I had it under control. I put this in her hand and she said OK, I like it, now what? Fifteen minutes later it was a done deal.
On the SR-22, this really seems like the real deal to me:
Polymer frame, aluminum slide, steel barrel (of course)
Fully adjustable rear sight, sights are 3 white dot, and you can reverse the rear to a black only
2 magazines, and pinkie finger extensions are included for both
Interchangeable grip inserts to adjust to smaller/larger hands
A Ruger embroidered case for the gun.
BTW: $289+tax. Really? Ruger got it right on this one.
So I stripped it down, which is not very far-it's a .22 plinker after all, and everything I see is solid, tight, no machining marks, easy takedown. It's a gun that feels good and my guess is it will be a real fun shooter.
Best part of all (and the reason I went in this direction) is that this is a hammer fired, DA/SA, de-cocking safety autoloader, the exact functional trainer for our house gun, S&W M-59.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Nice guns and you got a nice price on it. Very similar to the Walther P22. It's on my short list as soon as they put a threaded barrel on it (which I understand is in the works) so I can mount a Silencerco Sparrow.
My understanding is that threaded barrels are available from Ruger for purchase, and you can very easily install it. I don't think they plan on selling threaded model over the counter anytime soon.
This one is a huge step up from the Walther, I think. It feels very solid, aluminum slide rather than some zinc alloy used on the Walther. I'm not going to be a "hater", but the Walther has not had a great reputation.
