I have a .380 OMC Back Up pistol which is the same as an AMT Back Up just earlier. Was wondering if anyone had one and how they liked it? So far it's well made and solid, feeds everything nice. Just a little heavy for a carry gun. But having shot alot of the new polymer .380 pistols it's much more friendly to shoot.

I think that opinion on the AMT Back Up is pretty divided, with some quality concerns, maybe the earlier OMC is better. Having owned 3 different .380 pocket pistols, I can say:
KelTec P3AT pretty much broke the .380 polymer pistol into the mainstream, and is a pretty good gun, a little rough and crude
Colt Mustang is a very well made and nice pistol, too heavy for a pocket pistol. If it needs a belt holster, it might as well be a 9mm
Ruger LCP is clearly a P3AT ripoff, but better finished
Also, a shooter that I know very well, and whom I respect, is very happy with his Sig P238.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I had an AMT DAO .380 I carried when I drove over the road. On one of my range sessions the slide cracked right underneath the ejection port. I sent it off to AMT, they replaced the slide, but I sold it soon after I got it back... I just couldn't trust it anymore.
I replaced it with a Colt Gov't .380 (not a Colt Mustang,) this would be a 'full-sized .380' (which, on reflection, is an oxymoron...) It's a bit bigger than the AMT (or most of the other current poly-frame .380's out there) but I have big hands and can shoot it very well. Another bonus is it has the same controls as my 1911 .45 I carry normally, so there isn't a different manual of arms to consider when switching between pistols.
The AMT wasn't a bad pistol, and I considered getting one in .45 when they came out, but once that slide cracked... that was it.

I have heard that the Backup has a kind of spotty reliability history, so I'd run it pretty hard before trusting it. On the other hand, I pushed my new LCP pretty hard before I trusted it, and the P3AT, and, well, you get the idea.

I know there are a lot of knocks on the AMT Backup, but I have a 45 backup, SS and I really like it. No jams or cracks that I know of. Pretty snppy when shooting, but pretty accurate. My wife has shot it and she likes everything but the weight. A little heavy for a CC, jut my opinion.

I had a .45 backup for a short while. It was my first non rimfire handgun. I traded it off quickly, for a 9mm mini firestorm, because at the time I thought that the recoil was brutal. I do remember the trigger pull was heavy, as was the gun. I remember taking it to the range and putting a couple hundred rounds through it. My hand was sore for a couple days after.
I agree about the trigger, safety issue, and the weight and it being right snappy. I just traded mine and 3 boxes of ammo for a Ruger M77 MKII .223 Target in SS with one box of ammo. Rifle has not had a scope on it and only been fired 2 times. Guess who got the better end of this deal? Now I have to find another CC.

I've had several .380s, and still have three or four. One of them is an AMT, and it's probably my least favorite.
Reasons? It doesn't fit me well. It's blocky. And you need tools to disassemble it. On the other hand, it has a grip safety, which I kind of like.
The little gun has been reliable, but I just don't like to shoot it. I'd probably sell it if I could get motivated to put it on Armslist.
The Mauser HSC is bigger and heavier, but WAY more comfortable.
The Kel-tec is snappy but light and comfortable.
My favorite is Colt's .380 Government--I love the miniature 1911 look. I still don't understand why they quit making those. I thought it was the best little .380 on the market--but boy do they cost money now!
What I'd like to try is the miniature Luger that Erma put out some years ago. I've yet to encounter one at a reasonable (to me) price, but it's just an intriguing little gun.

Me too! 10mm would be way too much for me in that size gun. I'm still sticking with the LCP in .380 for the "always there" gun. I had a Colt Mustang for a while, I never got comfortable with 1911 Condition 1 in pocket carry, and the Mustang had a very small, short thumb safety. Simple is always better for me.

The recoil from the 10mm is not that bad. No more than one in .45. the gun is quite heavy for it's size.
I carried this gun for 7 years in my pocket for work. Did I mention that it is heavy? I finally Changed to
a Ruger LCP in .380. That lasted about 3 months. One night my wife says to me, my revolver won't fit
in this small purse. Stupid me says, here try this. Gone! Now I carry this again every day. I try and shoot
it some every time I get to the range. Must say that it never fails to go bang, but has a very heavy trigger.
