The DE in .50AE is pretty much a .50 Magnum cartridge. The case length is "magnum length" (1.285"). The DE is a very heavy gun, at least 64 ounces so recoil isn't all that bad.
The 500 S&W is really a ".505 Supermag" (Gates designation) with a case length of 1.61". Even though the 500 S&W is also a heavy gun, I believe it will have quite a bit more recoil than the DE in .50AE.

I don't want to violate any forum terms of use, so I won't post the link here, but go to youtube and search under Smith and Wesson 500 magnum 700 grain. There is a video of a guy shooting a 500 with a 4" barrel, probablly the funniest candid reaction on youtube. If you want to know what kind of recoil it has, watch that video, about 30 sec. long. I've watched it several times and laugh out loud everytime.
