Seriously, I'd love to see the M/96. what is a "Seal Gun"?
I'm guessing you're Finnish?
in -50 to -70 many guys earned they living hunting seals.
Rifle needed to be superb accurate and shooters gotta know where to hit.
Distances were about 150 meters to 250 meters, Seals are very clever. They see if you are close so hunter need to be still on ice maybe many hour and killing spot is just less than 5cm area behind seals ear.
Caliber was usually 7.62x53R and cone was matched to Lapua D46 12g bullet.
I really don`t know is my writing make any sense, but ask if i need to clarify something.
Very nice collection. It's always fun to not only shoot a rifle, but hunt with it. Is the 7.62X53R based in the Russian 7.62X54R?

53R and 54R are almost identical but if you got tight chambered 53R that 54R surplus ammo won`t go in chamber.
These sealrifles was pretty much like poor man´s benchrest rifles.
Scopes was best that they can afford. Barrel is made Sako and it`s very thick,
32mm diameter in top of a chamber and 21mm from muzzle end.
Sako also did make that barrel swap too.
btw i never been shoot that carl gustav and koekivääri
i got 8 mosin-nagants and 5 of these i never fired.

My understanding of the Mauser bolt action is that it is the father of all bolt action rifles. It was the first efficient bolt action design made. From a collectors point of view you like to have the historical designs that first made history. A lot of people I know love to hunt with the vintage ones and they are very accurate.

You are correct Gary. The Mauser action was the first real "modern" bolt action. It was licensed for production from Spain to Turkey to South America and beyond. The US found in the Spanish American War that the Krag-Jorgenson Springfield Model 1892-99 issued to our troops was far inferior to the Spanish Mauser. As a result a search for a new rifle was launched resulting in the Springfield 03. Guess what? We ripped off the Mauser action! After all, why reinvent the wheel. It is very robust and has an iconic 3 position safety... safe/bolt lock, safe/bolt free or fire. The Mauser influence can be found in many top end sporting rifles today.
My Mauser is a 1937 K98. Judging by it's appearance I'm betting it saw some action in WWII. It is dead nuts accurate with iron sights and my bad eyes at 100 yds. Scoped it's a nail driver at 200+ yards. Good ammo is relatively easy to find. I shoot allot of Yugo surplus which makes it very affordable at the range. Allot of guys are afraid of the label "corrosive". In most cases this means the primer has been stabilized with salt. A thorough cleaning with right cleaner is all that's required. In a pinch you can run hot water with dih soap down the bore. You just have neutralize the salt rather quickly.
If you like long guns and you like historical long guns, I reccomend a K98.
