Dave- not brass but there is little finish left- probably 30%. It has all gone to grey patina with hints of plumb here and there.
What drew me to this particular one was the fact that none of the screw heads are buggered. So, either previous owners took great care not to mess anything up or no one ever disassembled it... either way it's a win. Bore is described as VG+ with sharp rifling- although bore condition isn't a big consideration. Best of all- shipped straight to the door w/o listing on my C&R, so- no record, since it's an antique. Told my wife that I could, after all , get into antique shopping....

Guess you are comfortable buying in your age bracket?
So based on this "Age Hating" post I need to look for a Revolutionary War era musket?
Or maybe a rock to throw at a dinosaur?
This one made it "Still Fun"
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Yep. Now that the ][V][ichigan slaughter of Hawaii is done, I'm going to go back to knapping some flint spear points for the upcoming Brontosaurus hunt.
To the paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers:
if you find one...what's your plan?

Can you shoot modern/reload ammo int it?Nice piece of history, good going.
My plan is to Cerrosafe the chamber and slug the bore to get the correct dimensions. Then I'll probably cast some Keith style 44s and load over some shotshell powder. No problems as long as I get the dimensions straight.

I would love to own a working firearm that is over a hundred years old...hope to one day. What caliber is it?
CF- this rifle is 44WCF (.44-40 as Stinger notes). I have a few other rifles that are antiques; a .577 Enfield-Snider Mk III, a .577/450 Martini Henry, and a 1950's custom sporter built on around a Model 1873 Springfield in .45-70.
There's something about the old shooters that I just like.
