I believe the barrel tool is a mandrel that uses the rifling to unscrew the barrel. The barrel screws into the shroud I think.
Bob Serva of Norwich made a deal with S&W to manufacture the frames of Dan Wessons and Serva made the barrel assemblies. 6 of each of 6 calibers were produced as prototypes. In exchange S&W recieved DW barrel and shroud tech. S&W used it on their new X frame guns and then the Scandium guns and others. When Serva sold DW to CZ the prototypes were distrubuted to executives and family. Some have showed up on Gunbroker. I have a 22, 357 and a 44 mag. There are also 445,45acp and one other I don't know what caliber.
Manurhin made an MR 73 with interchangable barrels AND calibers for a while using the barrel and shroud. Korth, Janz and others did or do too. Many other revolvers now use it but none are as user friendly as Dan Wesson. It is now routine for accuracy but most gun makers don't want owners doing it.
