My dad bought this model 88 6in. barrel used at Sears in 1957, and the whole family shot the poop out of it. I believe High Standards made it in 1955. I took it out uncleaned since the 60's a few months ago, and I couldn't believe it still shoots. Anyone else have one of these? Cool old revolver!

My first handgun was a JC Higgins Model 88. When my wife decided to start carrying, it became her first handgun too. When she moved up to a more powerful round, I was going to have my Model 88 turned into a snubby. Now my daughter has taken interest in the gun so I'll put my plans for it on hold.
The M88 was indeed made by High Standard. Most reference sites will tell you that it was a High Standard R-102, but research will show that depending on the features of the gun, it could be an R-101, R-102, or R-103. But even then, many of the parts are not interchangable between JC Higgins and High Standard, so I consider it an independant model.
The Model 88 has been renowned by more than a few gun writers as having the most comfortable grip of any revolver. Part of this comes from the thumb rest molded into the frame on both sides. I agree, something about the gun just fits any hand that holds it.
These guns have a unique ratcheting action that I've not seen on any other revolver and so far mine has functioned flawlessly.
The only misfires I ever had was using federal bulk ammo. Once I switched to CCI MiniMags, I never had another problem. I regularly shoot 2" groups at 25yds with the 4" barrel and CCI MiniMags.
Here she is:
Somewhere along the line, I picked up the factory new barrel and "ladies grip" for when I decide to snub the gun.
Here's a couple places with Model 88 info:

Mine looks just like Porter's. When I took it out a few months ago, it was misfiring on very old rem's ammo, and i'm thinking it could have been caused by the gun not being cleaned since the 60's. Ha! I haven't shot the gun in all of these years except a few rounds in the early 70's, and yes, I broke down and cleaned it a few days ago, and it took forever! Very dirty! The gun is exactly like Porter's and the model # is 16*05.
Lonewolf: What are they trying to get for the one you are following? I'm wondering if I could trade my 88 for a full size revolver in 22lr about the same size and wt. as my DW 15 357 with a 2.5 barrel, as that is what I practice with, but I have no idea what it's worth. Maybe not a lot? Of course I would have to get some new ammo, and find out if it still misfires. On the otherhand it would be a bit hard to get rid of a part of my childhood. Whats a mother to do? I know, nobody is old enough to remmember that stupid cereal commercial from the 70's. Right?

Here is my theory & what I eventually want to do…I want to keep my HS 9-shot as it's so fun to shoot, but am keeping my eye out for a DW .22lr to go along with my 15-2 .357, which, if I'm not mistaken would be "exactly" the same size & weight as the .357 since it's the same frame (experts correct me if I'm wrong)…just a matter of finding one that I'm not too "cheap" to get…lol…just my 2 pennys…
Oh & I am definitely old enough to remember that commercial…haha…

I'm surprised at how many are out there and available. Enjoy.
So am I, actually. I see them all over the place.
That reminds me, I almost jumped on a pristine looking NIB Double-9 S.A. (don't know which actual model that is) a while back, but then another DW Porkchop popped up & I had to feed the for some odd reason.

There are actually 2 on GB right now, one for $189 & one for $195. Neither one has any bids. I'm still thiniking about one, but I did already buy a pistol this week! My advice to you, if your model 88 was in the family that long you better hang on to it. You'll be glad you did for all the memories in that pistol.

+1...I had a jc higgins model 31 .22 rifle that belonged to my Dad & it was stolen last fall...it was a great old rifle...the insurance paid off & i replaced it with a brand new marlin 60, but it's just not the same...since then I've seen some old jc higgins rifles on GB...been thinking about grabbing one...still not quite the same though...

I believe the M22 will actually be slightly heaver than the model 15-2 due to the smaller holes down the barrel and the cylinder, other that that they will be the same. I am not an expert though so some one else may correct my asumptions.

That makes sense to me...
722 4VH weighs 40.65 oz
715 4VH weighs 38.40
I think most of the difference is in the barrel weight, cylinders are different length
722 cylinder LOA=1.512"
715 cylinder LOA=1.629"
The .22 cylinder is shorter.
Since the micrometer is out anyways:
722 barrel wall thickness at the muzzle is .157"
715 barrel wall thickness at the muzzle is .080"
Yeah, just a little too much time on my hands tonite, but I rarely get to play with my micrometer
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
