Went to a local gun show and as usual I was getting overwhelmed by all of the stuff.  There was the usual collection of gun dealers and paraphernalia sellers present  There were no Dan's and very few individual sellers.  I was close to the last table and among the paraphernalia I spy a box with an old man sitting next to it.  Lo and behold the box contains an H&R 949.  It appears NIB, no rust, strong and bright rifling, not a hint of having been fired and not a scratch on it.  (I purchased an H&R 686 in the early 80's and gave that one to one of my boys last Christmas.)  I took this one home for $200.  Image Enlarger

That was my first handgun. I still have it and keep it mint.  However, mine is all blue.  That one looks like the bluing has been removed from the barrel and the frame.

Maybe its just the pic.

Enjoy.

Congrats on that pick up. That's a great specimen. I guess it wasn't meant for you to be without an H&R like that. You had better keep this one. smile

I may have an original holster for you--We had a "49" a long time ago.  My kids still talk about the "9 shot"

Thanks guys.  The pics don't do it justice.  The frame is that mottled brown that H&R still uses on their shotguns.  The cylinder is an interesting gray.  It must have come that way.  (My old 686 was blued.)  The box and original packaging is pristine.  I can't believe somebody would have stripped the cylinder given the condition of the gun and the box.  It's like somebody opened the box once or twice, stuck it in a drawer and forgot about it.

It has the typical H&R heavy pull on the trigger.  I ordered some springs from Wolff.  Hopefully I can find something that will lighten it up.  Obviously I'm planning on shooting this one some but it will be very carefully handled and passed on to one of my other boys.  (The 686 gift to my boy was a special moment.  Childhood and my first wife were hard on him.  We hardly spoke for a five year stretch.  I asked him to go shooting with me a couple of years ago.  Shooting just kind of brought him out of seclusion, so I gave him the gun.  It means a lot to him.  He's going to college now and doing very well.  Thank God and thank the second amendment.  occasion)

Hey Mike, I'd love to see a pic of yours if you could.  Thanks in advance.

Shoot, if you want to sell that holster, let me know.  I doubt I ever carry it but it would be a nice addition.
