I don't, and I know almost nothing about them. I'm looking forward to some of you guys educating me a bit about them. I think I know that they are legendary for reliability under extreme conditions.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I think everyone needs at least one AK. They are so cheap to buy and also cheap to shoot. They may not be as accurate as the AR15, but notoriously reliable while arguably slightly more "classic" than the AR. Unlike the AR though, they are difficult to customize. I enjoy customize build ARs tremendously, but when it comes to AK, I pretty much leave them as they were purchased.
I have several variants, including a Polish Tantal AK-74, a bullpup, a rarer Chinese Norinco 84s-1 .223; however, my ultimate one is a true Russian Type III built from a parts kit. It's extremely rare and I got lucky to have been able to purchase the parts kit from a friend. The receiver was re-welded and rebuilt with 922R-compliant parts by Matt Yeamans in Oregon. The completed build was sent to Jayson at Invest Grade Firearms for refinishing. My friend's dad actually refinished the furniture to the original color. In the end, it's the closest to an original Russian AK that it could be (Matt used the original Izhmash serial number). Here are a couple of crappy shots of my pride and joy that shoots like a dream (I've been meaning to take new photos).

My son has one he bought new about a year and a half ago. Like mythaeus said, it is not as accurate as an AR-15, but it is a tool that has stood the test of time. I personally have no fascination with the AK's, it is really not even much pleasure to shoot compared to the AR-15 IMHO. To answer Blacktop, though, we have one

I truly do like the AKs. I have 3 Romainians for plunking. I also built out a 7.62x39 on an AR platform for hog hunting. I am currently waiting for the transfer to come through on a Russian full auto AK. Fortunately the ammo is cheap; the gun, not so much.

I dunno...
...as a former auto parts dude, the very mention of the word "Yugo" makes any normal American parts dude with any experience wanna run & hide....those cars REALLY left a lot to be desired, and that's being polite.
So...
...yes, they sucked. That is all on that. Which leaves me wondering, can the gun be any better than the car??...hmm?
Just asking.

Unlike cars, guns have fewer moving parts so they are a bit harder to screw up. The Yugo AK is more or less identical to the original AK, not mucking around with too much of the original design. Yugo AKs are actually well-known work horses and are well-liked among AK owners. Keep in mind also that it also depends on the quality of the parts kit and the company that rebuilt them. CAI (Century Arms) makes a lot of AK, but they are generally much poorer quality and quality control. Pretty much (almost) anyone else besides CAI does a better job building AKs.

Got a Romanian AK cheap from a buddy, who got it cheap in a trade for a dirt bike. Turned out the front sight block and the gas block were both canted on the barrel, I had to drive the pins out, tap them into alignment and redrill for 1/8" pins. The wood looked like it was finished with a 4" grinder, so I took it all off, sanded smooth and put about 5 coats of Tru-oil on, looks great and shoots great now.
It's very reliable now that I realize it needs FMJ to feed properly, cheap to shoot and easy to clean. My teenage daughters like shooting it more than I do though.

I had a Norinco Mac-90 (Chinese AK clone) for a short time. The gun's accuracy led me to believe it's barrel must have been made out of bamboo or something. I traded it off for a new FN-P40, which I traded for a 10mm 1911, which got traded for a Remington 700 SPS Tactical .223. I still have the Remy.

Wow this thead is just picture poor . Ok I'll post my little popper.
EAA Zastava P.A.P made in Serbia. Nothing special just a plain Jane example
but is new manufacture and not the surplus builds some of the importers
are bringing in. Has a full one year warranty and is surprisingly very accurate.
Not as great as my AR but this will group sub 2" at 50 yrds with iron sights
but best is it will eat anything you throw down the tube, FMJ's , HP's or SP
and it's not brand picky either, Wolf, Tula, Tiger, Brown/Silver Bear, even
the Yugo surplus stuff too. Have shot this over 1k rounds and yet to have
a failure anything yet.

I guess you guys can laugh, but my CAI 1960 Polish milled is great, with the smoothest action I've ever felt on an AK. Most reviewers are hard-pressed to find anything wrong with them, and mine came with all the cleaning rod, tool kit, and 3 mags. It seems they've either stepped up their game or they're farming them out. Non-chrome barrel, but I don't care. $600 for a milled AK isn't bad, these days.
