All this furor over AR-15's got me to thinking about adding another,or at least an upper. Anybody have any opinions or experiences with the 300 Blackout? I like the fact that it will use standard AR mags and also uses 308 bullets which are readily available and reasonably inexpensive.
I also see subsonic loads for the 300 which would work well with a suppressor.
I'm also looking at the 6.5 Grendel but the ammo seems way to costly to allow much shooting.
The 6.5 Creedmore looks like it would need new mags and possibly restrict magazine capacity as well as being expensive.
Lets hear your thoughts.

I have a 16" 300 Blackout upper and used to have a H&R Handi break action in 300 Black. Sold the H&R but will soon replace with a Ruger Ranch bolt action in 300 Black.
Fun cartridge to reload for. I like loading 125 grain bullets with 18 grains of H-110 for around 2100 fps supersonic loads. It will do fine on PA Whitetail at 100 yards and in. The supersonic loads will cycle no problem in an AR.
Subsonic loads in an AR require a heavier bullet and Certain powders like A1680 to build up enough pressure to reliably cycle the action.
Are you going to get a suppressor for the subsonic loads? Suppressors are cool even with supersonic loads.
In an AR platform a 300 BLK has the same bolt, same magazines, same lower as a 5.56/.223. But be careful when switching uppers and magazines. I have seen photos on the internet of guns where people mistakenly shot a 300 BLK in a 5.56/.223 barrel. Bad NEWS!!
I like 300 BLK and enjoy reloading for it because of the range of bullet weights 90 gr-220 gr. I really enjoyed reloading subsonic for break/bolt action using 5 grains of trail boss and 125 grain SPeer TNT bullets. These loads are ridiculously quiet when suppressed.

Thanks Bowhunter, that's the kind of info I was hoping for. I don't have a suppressor yet, but am planning on getting one in the near future.
You confirmed what I was thinking that H-110 and 1680 powders work well in the 300BLK. I already load those powders in my Dan's so no need to stock another powder.
I hear you on mixing up the cartridges, I will be keeping a dedicated set of mags for the 300 and won't have any 300 around when running .223/5.56.
I'm leaning towards a 16" 300 BLK complete upper with it's own bolt carrier for on top of my AR. Looks so simple it's almost scary.

This is a good 300 BLK forum for just about any topic you might want to read more about. Enjoy.

Something to seriously think about? Stockpile a few lowers, and make sure you have all the magazines you are ever likely to want.
We (Connecticut) had our furor after Sandy Hook. Nothing got confiscated or taken away, but with very few exceptions, CT residents can't buy AR's or any magazine over 10 rounds. Items owned items of the type were required to be registered with the State Police.
The exceptions? Police and Corrections Officers Hmmmmm
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
