I'm a 1911 novice. My first was an STI. Just ordered my first DW Valor edition in black. Very excited to take delivery. But, my question is, are STI's solid hand guns? How do they stack up to Dan Wesson's? I own a Ranger II and it took over 3 months to deliver. The dealer said they were made to order. Sales pitch or for real...?

With the exception of the Spartan (which is their value priced gun built with Armscor parts) I'd say that STI makes one of the very best 1911s on the market (some will argue that they make the absolute best "production" 1911s out there) … their guns dominate ISPC.
The Spartan is still a pretty darn good gun … I'd rather have a Spartan than a brand new Springfield or for that matter Kimber.
I'm not going to be very popular with this statement but your Ranger II is a better gun than any Dan Wesson 1911 (not that there's anything wrong with the Dan Wesson 1911s). I'd put STI up against any production 1911 out there (and frankly most custom shop guns).
"Made to order" is no sales pitch.
On a side note, having an STI as one's first 1911 is much like having a Ferrari as one's first car. 😀

Thanks for the words of advice. Now I feel like a real smuck. I have consigned that STI at a local gun dealer's shop. Now I'm second guessing that decision. I did leave out the fact that my Ranger is a 9mm, not .45. That was my real mistake!!
Anyway, thanks for the response.
