I was considering the purchase of a S&W 500 until I got my mitts on one. And for me the thnig is too bulky for me. I don't have anything against the gun I just won't buy anything that doesn't feel right in my hands. I know that you can change the grips and everything to get a more comfortable fit but I still don't think that would help me out. I don't know anything about the 460 xvr that might be something that I need to check into. I'm interested in what the rest of our members have to say about this.

I owned a 460 for awhile, thought it sounded like the next needed big gun. It was too big and bulky and just plain unfriendly to shoot IMHO. I traded it on the SS 357 Pistol Pack and another blued 15-2 with a 6" barrell even up, never have I regretted it. I love my Supermags, but they feel good in my hands, the 460XVR just did not fit. That is my story and I'm sticking to it

Nice photo comparison. Given that the S&W is firing a larger caliber, the DW actually seems a little more substantial in comparison.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I shoot both the 500 and 460, but I handload for both so I have no idea as far as factory ammo and cost comparison. The 45 caliber bullets are cheaper as a componant than the 50's. Powder and primers are going to run the same. Brass is a variable as to how many loading you get.

I would get the .460sw because you can also shoot .454 casull rounds in most revolvers chambered for .460sw.
The difference between .460sw and .454 casull is the same different between .38 and .357mag.
Not to mention that .460sw has a little bit better ballistics when it comes to hunting. The 500 is a bit overkill for personal protection.

As an owner of a 500 S n W with the 8" bbl, I have also shot a 445 super mag of my friends. I will honestly say I prefer the feel and handling of the DW than the X frame Smith. I hunt, mostly with hand guns. I stared with a 357 Python, n soon moved to a 41 mag M 657. I hunted with it for years and still do. I recieved a 480 ruger 7 1/2" super redhawk. Then the X frame was out n I got the 500. I do alot of bear and wild boar hunting. The 500 is awsome on them. The 480 is good on the black bear n wild boar. On a brown bear I'd prefer the 500. In shooting the 445 supermag of my friends, I can find no fault to it. As I said it feels better than the x frame. I understand there is a rumor that DW will offer a new revolver to the market. If they do and it is a super mag, I'll be hunting with one.
