The last few trips to my LGS trying to find small pistol primers I saw this @1975 Model 28-2. I finally asked to inspect it more closely and left with it. The trigger is very smooth and the SA break is very light.  after adjusting the elevation it hits exactly where I aim with my Xtreme 158gr RNFP over 6.4gr-7.4gr HP38 in 357 case reloads. It's my first N frame Smith. It dwarfs my Ruger GP100s. It's a beast.IMG_2216.JPGImage Enlarger

Nice score, stonebuster! Very cool to see a one of these with service grips, but I notice you put a Pachmayr grip on it. I would too; the service grips can be a real knuckle buster shooting Magnums. I know the N frame S&W is huge, so I can’t quite tell if it’s a 3 or 4 inch barrel.

31/2". Even sweeter is its Grandfather, Registered Magnum. Some say the finest revolver ever built. First gun to chamber 357 Magnum. Then they became the 357 Magnum, then the model 27 and model 28. Today's versions chamber 8 rounds and the Scandium models are fabulous.

The Magna grips look better but don't work for me with XL arthritic/swollen fingers. After the first range trip I had a big dent in the middle finger knuckle that lasted for a few hours so I ordered the Pachmayr. When I first saw the gun I assumed it was a pre 1968 gun because it had the Diamond Magna grips but checking the serial number it's @1975 vintage. The Diamond grips ended in 1968 so not original. I measured the endshake last night and it's about .005 which is about time for endshake bearings/shims from what I understand. I ordered from Trigger shims.com(Lance). Cylinder pushed forward B/C gap measured .003 and pushed back hard .008. Larry Potter makes it look pretty easy in his video other than the ejector rod might need warming up to loosen if someone has locktited it. I've got a Model 10 that needs the same fix so I'll try to shim the M10 first to get the hang of it. The barrel measures 4" to the rear of barrel inside frame "window." BTW, the cash for the gun was from selling a rock I mined(Smokey Quartz crystal 7") 25 years ago. A mineral dealer got my name at a show and ended up paying me $2000 for the crystal.download.pngImage Enlarger

Just snagged one few months ago with the box, papers, and police equipment advertisements. Mines a 6 inch, had rubbers on it but I like original so I put some magnas on it. Nice shooters!

The Magnas look great but punish my middle finger knuckle too much. I put the Pachmayr on until I can find a S&W target grip that won't cost as much as the revolver. It does shoot well!

You can buy grip Pachmyer or Mershon grip adapters on eBay cheap. Not the $800 prewar S&W factory ones. They make Magnas usable.
