A friend of my fathers' brought a vintage muzzel loading rifle to me to see if I could help him find out what it is worth as he'd like to sell it. It is a percussion cap muzzel loader with octagon shaped barrel. There are no markings on the gun that I can find. It has a brass ringed door in the stock to store caps and patches. I also has brass covering aournd the butt plate. The gun looks origional, brown barrel etc. the hammer spring or something is dammaged, as I couldn't cock it or lock it back. Has a wooden ram rod.
Does anybody know where to start with something this old? I saw one similar last weekend at a show so I'm thinking of going to another show and seeing if I can find a vendor selling similar items and get his opinion. I'll try to get some pics of it after he brings it to me for before the show. Its pretty cool, I wouldn't mind having it but I doubt I could afford it.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

If a man designed it, and a man built it, then a man can fix it.

I have several Black powder guns and a couple like the PA style. A picture of it would help. In the old days it was easier to make an octagon barrel instead of a round barrel. Is the wood Tiger Maple? I have one like that is. What caliber is it? The .44 cal was common and the .36 cal. Some people like to build them. The Douglas barrel was an expensive barrel that could be bought for them. There are a lot European makers of the PA style. I really love those long guns. I have several plains rifles too. They can be very accurate. I have a flint lock and a percussion one.
