I'm awaiting delivery of a two gun set of DWs, a 357 with 4 barrels and a 44 mag with 3 barrels. My first 44 magnum shooting experience was a Dirty Harry length 629 on which I learned to control my unfounded fear of recoil. I was reloading at the time and my loads were eventually as hot as I thought the gun could stand. I finally settled on handloads near the heaviest possible. So, recoil was considerably heavier than factory loads. I later bought a couple other Smiths one of which was a 4 or 5 inch and long and shorter barrel TC Contenders where the recoil was heavy but very controllable. In the end, I am very comfortable with recoil.
So, now, I am anxiously awaiting getting my hands on my new (to me) DW 44 mag to spend time at the range with it. Of all of my anticipation, I am most looking forward to shooting the shorter barreled versions of both guns.
Just curious on feedback concerning the recoil of such light barrels. My guns don't have the heavier barrel under lugs.

I have a 2" from EWK and it is quite a handful. Its actually fun to shoot. You get a lot of looks at the range, there is quite a bit of flame and a healthy recoil, but its not unmanageable. I find the recoil stout but very controllable. Full on 44 mags are a 'blast' to shoot, pun intended. 4" is also a fun length. The gun frame is so heavy that it absorbs much of the recoil in both lengths.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

I truly laughed out loud at your description of "quite a bit of flame..." comment. I just, today, saw a photo of someone firing a 44 mag at night and....WOW!, flames from the front and the middle of the gun... 3 feet or so. It's the picture on the 14th page of the DW photo thread. I'm going to try it once I get my gun, but I bet the 2" barrel gets very little use while it's in my possession.

Flinching aside, recoil is important for the second and follow-on shots. Otherwise not an issue until the pain sets in that night in the finger/wrist joints.
I haven't been shooting 44 mag for some time since my focus has been on those new fangled 1911s...lol. I have been shooting a Ruger SR1911 among several other calibers. I sold my Smith & Wesson non-fluted barrel 29 Hunter Classic and my S&W 686 357 recently...a really dumb decision, both were beauties and shot well.
I've been working on a newly acquired tactical Armalite AR15 for a couple months, trying hard to get it configured the way I want it. I'm almost done with that and just in time to focus on my newest DW acquisitions (haven't taken delivery of them yet).
IT"S ALL GOOD.

I think you will find the recoil less than a S +w mod 29 even with the lighter barrel. As Scorpios sayed, the frame is much heavier.
I just read a comment that said the DW revolvers "dwarf" their Smith 629 wheel guns. I didn't realize the DWs were bigger in dimensions and heavier than the Smith counterparts.
I'm getting kinda miffed that the person I'm buying these 2 DWs hasn't called me confirming that he's found all the accessories for the guns. He's a weird old cuss, but a good friend...absent minded but thinking he is very organized. He put the tools and gages somewhere where they wouldn't get lost, but now has forgotten where that was. Ya' gotta have a little patience with him, and I'm trying.

I'm not a DW Large Frame expert, I have owned and shot couple of them.
The DW design (large and small frame) is very strong with design factors that contribute to their strength. If you research the manufacturers of heavy .44 Mag loadings, you will see that DW revolvers are rated to manage their strongest loads with no issue
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

4" is my favorite barrel length to shoot. Dans balance very well and recoil, even in the 44 are very manageable. Of course, I am used to recoil and only flinch when firing someone else's reloads...
I'd love to find a 4" for my 741 and especially for my 7445!
