Went to my local range today and there was some considerable Dan Wesson envy evident. Today, fathers day, meant a lot of people there I don’t normally see. I started out with my Ruger Mk III Hunter at 20 yards which didn’t bring much excitement. The .22 is a nice warm up to calm the flinches and pushes that I have issues with. It shoots very well with almost no recoil. If you shoot it they way you are supposed to you will get very good results. After 100 rounds of .22 I pack up the Ruger and bring out my DW 15-2 with the 8” HV barrel. I start out at 10 yards with .38s since I have new Williams sights and I wanted to see the holes. A couple of windage adjustments and the guy next to me notices that all 6 go through a hole the size of a quarter. He peaks around the divider to make sure that I’m not using a sand bag while I’m cranking the target out to 20 yards.
I fire 6 .38s and crank it in to see a 6” group dead center. I turn around to shake out my arms and stretch (the revolver is heavy) and there are now three guys watching me. I load up .357s to clean out the barrel and shoot 6 at 20 yards holding a little high since the .357s hit low when I sight in with .38s. Everyone else is shooting 9mm so the booms are noticable. I crank in and see a 4” group of 5 and one flyer really low (I hate those pushes). Since I’m starting bad habits again I pack up that DW and pull out my DW 44.
I had done some shooting with the 10 HV barrel before but the whole system was just too heavy for me to shoot comfortably so I had just put on my 8” V barrel and switched the EWK fiber optic front sight to this barrel which is a nice compliment to the Williams rear sight. I shoot 2 at 10 yards and they land 1” apart in the center. I know that the shock wave was felt two lanes either side of me. I crank the target out to 20 yards and turn around to stetch again and there are 6 guys there and they want to know what I’m shooting. I tell them about the DWs and that they should look them up. I carefully and slowly shoot 6 .44s and end up with a dead center hole 3” in diameter.
I don’t shoot this well. I know in my heart of hearts that the next group is going to really suck and that the last shot was a flich and a push and that I might have missed the paper. I tell myself that I’m starting to push, .44 cartidges are expensive, my back is getting stiff, there are other people waiting for the lane, I need to clean the grill... time to go. I quickly pack up, three of the guys want to hold my DW 44 so I let them, I take down the target, look meaningfully at that 3” hole and get the hell out of there.

Now this is what I am talking about. We have this great forum but hardly anyone talks about shooting. It is great to hear someone with a quality revolver went out shooting and gave a bunch of guys who probably never looked at a revolver something to think about. I see it at the range all the time. You plug a bunch of holes in a pretty good group and everyone wants to know what you are shooting. When you hand them a big old magnum most them do not even know how to hold it. Keep making them wish they purchased revolver LOL

Sounds like a good trip. I don't get there enough. I used to have some property I could shoot on, but that went away. I tend to try and go at times that the range is slow. When there I typically shoot a range of guns from my DW .357, to a .357 Rossi levergun, to my CZ 9mm, to my AK. I have seen people peep around to look at what I am doing. I guess I look too serious, crazy, and/or scary. No one ever talks to me.
One of the last times I was there, the people staring at me were a dad and 2 sons (I think). They were plinking with a .22lr revolver and semi. The AK did not phase them much, but when I emptied the .357 lever into a quarter sized hole rapid fire, I got quite a few heads turned. There is just something about the .357. I don't have a .44, but I have threatened to take my Dad's .444 up there one day. lol

I have some outside-of-town acreage, so I do most of my shooting at home, but I sometimes go to any of a number of ranges. The ol' '81-vintage 8" Model 44 does get some attention when I unlimber it around a bunch of folks fooling with their plastic fantastic 9mm's! LOL

Jim

I just returned from The Pin Shoot in Central Lake, MI. Ten days of shooting. Every time I pulled out the DW 44 everyone had to stop and look. Both revolvers and semi-autos were being used however the DW seems to catch everyone's eye.
On shooting ranges - back at home there is a huge outdoor shooting facility. Sporting clays, 540 yard rifle range, and many pistol bays. Membership is $125.00 per year, unlimited shooting seven days a week, 9:00 AM till dusk. I joined this year. I am out there three - four times a week.
Sounds like a great day.
Here is a shooting drill I do all of the time with revolvers. I'll only load five or four rounds, never string them
in sequence. It really brings down the flinching after five or ten minutes. I'll even load 38s & .357s.
Give it a try next time.

If you're going to drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.
After shooting 50 .38s when I have the 8HV barrel on I kind of notice that I need to rest more between loads.
Nothing wrong with that, it's not a race. It's about control:
Breathing - deep breath, let half of it out, squeeze the trigger.
Relaxation - along with this is proper stance
Mindset - focus, see through the shot...much like a golf shot, ball throw, ...
And don't let anyone ever tell you anything about Muscle Memory...there's no such thing. Certain muscles may be developed which performing a task, but it is your mind that is in control.
If you're going to drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.
