I did my research online with archived magazine articles, and had a brief conversation with his brother, George.
This 1988 Pre-production model came standard with the blued barrels on the SS gun. The font of "445 SuperMag" is different than production models. And I have speculated that only the pre-production barrel assemblies came stamped with "U.S.A." behind Monson Mass as most marketing media and production models are missing this.

DM being an avid hunter supposedly suggested that clamps were not adequate for the power of the larger bore may have introduced the idea of factory out-of-the-box mounted scope. In that same year, the Hunter Pac was introduced.
DM later received Palmer pre-production (prototypes?) of the new compensated barrel assemblies after what many owners still call a failure of the Power Port barrel system. These compensated barrel assemblies required the barrel nut tool to remove the end cap. Both the tool and the end caps were redesigned before production:

This Dan did accompany him on many trips where he posted his trophy shots in magazines.
It did come with a "Certificate of Authenticity" signed by brother, George. May add nothing to value. But, a nice piece to add to collection.

Very cool, thanks for showing the shot of the end caps. I'm glad DW decided to change them to the knurled type for production. Regarding your theory on the "USA" on the shrouds, I think you are probably correct.
The only question I have is why is there a blue BA in that set? I could kind of see it if it was a different length from the other one, but it's not...so, kinda odd.

A Blue 445 was kept by family. That extra barrel likely belonged to it.
Oh, I see. Thanks, I thought everything pictured went as a set as pictured in the auction? Odd.

Oh, I have the Blued BA. They kept the gun it went to. A 445V10S as I understood, also with a "DM" serial#

Your 1988 date coincides with this......This was in a box of parts that I purchased from a guy that was a Dan Wesson Dealer back in the day. I'm not sure if this was made by DW for the SHOT Show or if it was distributed to dealers with the introduction of the .445 SuperMag. Anyway, the dates align up with your pre-production gun.
And this is what they ended up with.....it's one of my favorite BA's. They must have liked using yellow sights back then....same color as your pre-production BA (the bottom photo looks white....it's just the color washout in the photo).

Nice to see additional supporting materials. My dates are from his published magazine articles with the gun pictured. I downloaded all relevant publications in regards to the gun/model. Unfortunately, I did not save file names by "Magazine and Date". Maybe after my Gold Series Research is finished....(Google translator is my friend), I will go back and rename them.

I'm confused. The compensated barrels are Palmer so would they not be dated to 1991? I assumed that nothing stamped Palmer was made before they moved the company in 1991 so hot could these barrel shrouds be dated 1989?
Re-Read the post: "...DM later received Palmer pre-production (prototypes?) of the new compensated barrel assemblies...."
No date was given on the Palmer BAs. "Later: would mean after 1988. And 1991 being more recent, would be "later" than 1988.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"So just for the record according to Eric there were no compensated barrels made before 1991 In fact his father had a patented on them."
I think we already knew that. And, no one has stated otherwise.
(Hand hurts from slapping him upside the head too many times for creating an error where none existed)

The 1989 date on the tag was probably the release of the gun without the compensated barrel assy's. It most likely was not until 1991 that redesigned compensated barrel assy's. were released. It all make sense.

wow that's cool you found the patents with their names on it! I wonder if they get money from every other gun maker who is now using compensated barrels on their guns? To think there was not such a thing until these two invented a compensated barrel! Another little known fact from the Dan Wesson family!
