Since nobody has figured it out yet, obvious to me though. The 50 years is the 50th anniversary of the 357 cartridge, introduced by S&W and Winchester in 1934 in one of the finest revolvers ever, the registered magnum. Even a 1960's S&W model 27 pales next to a registered magnum, the work that went into fitting them and making them perfect was rather amazing. A revolver with that kind of attention to detail, fit and function would likely not be able to be sold today for less than 7 or 8k, making even a Korth take a back seat.

KarlH,
1934 was also the year that the VA ABC Board was established. That is pretty cool that the 357 cartridge was introduced that year as well so it would be fitting that they made this commemorative edition a 357. Were you refering that this particular gun would be worth 7 or 8k?
Thanks for your input,

I think Karl means that the Smith would be worth that much.
Your gun has a standard serial number, which is good...a custom
number makes it really tough to get a close idea of a manufacture date.
If you look at page 6 in the Registry list here...
https://www.danwessonforum.com/dwf-content/files/DanWessonSerialNumbers.pdf
The
"SD" number listed there is fairly close to yours, so I would imagine
that 1985 should be pretty close to when yours was made too.
Thanks for posting the

To add my 2 cents. This was a "limited edition" weapon for investigators assigned to the Enforcement Section of the VA Dept. of ABC. It celebrated the 50th annav. of the section. Soon thereafter they were merged with the inspection section and this saw the end of that group. Only investigators were allowed to purchase this gun. I was one of the younger investigators in the section at the time.I could kick myself now. My wife and I just had a kid and disposable cash was limited.....So no purchase.
Dan Wesson was chosen because they worked with investigtors on price and design. Love to get my hands on one now....Strange enough I carried at 15 2V 357 every so often while working. Great gun.

I recognized this firearm when I saw it and my dad has one of these. He works with the VA ABC board and he purchased this firearm in the 80's through the department (he said that he had no knowledge and doesn't think that these have ever been auctioned off). I will try to get some photos of it tomorrow after work and hopefully we can get some info on it because I have always been interested in knowing a present day value. Thanks for any info anyone can give!!

When was your dad with ABC? I was an investigator from 1981-84, in the old enforcement division. I was assigned to both Northern VA, then to Richmond. If you want to say, what was his name?

One of these guns recently showed up HERE for sale. And at $1539.99, the seller sure isn't giving it away! I thought I would post the two pics from the ad here, for posterity.

Not sure where your link took me, but it wasn't to the Gun Library of the Bristol, VA Cabela's which are where those photos originate. Was that where you intended to link to?
I saw this listing earlier in the week while searching for something else at Cabela's and at that time thought these guns originally might have been offered back in the day as a commemorative gun in magazines. Glad you posted now exposing this thread for me to read.
I have yet to see a used firearm listed in Cabela's Gun Library that I thought carried a fair price.

Woops, sorry for the wrong link, I have fixed it now. That's what I get for being in a hurry & not checking my work.
I have the Registered Magnum.. Drop dead gorgeous. My most valuable gun. Pure investment. I haven't shot it. No box or screwdriver but I do have a Jinks letter. I have branched out a little from Dan Wessons. No end to collecting Smiths so I try to keep it to 30's and 40's
