Converting a 22 lr to 22 mag, changed barrel, rechambered cylinder reassembled gun and fired first shot single action tried to fire second shot DA cylinder would not rotate and couln't get cylinder to unlatch, took gun apart.Checked shell bore in cylinder for burr because 1 shell had scratches on it honed out cylinder bores and reassembled gun.Installed snap caps tried to fire in DA cylinder would not rotate I think problem is head space, how do you check it and how to you correct it? any ideas on how to fix would be great

Is this the original cylinder?  That was chambered for 22mag?  Almost sounds like a timing issue to me, though not sure here!

I just converted a .22 LR to .22 Mag.  Had a cylinder rechambered, put it back together and it works fine.  Dressed it up a bit with a heavy shroud from EWK slapped a scope on it and she groups good at 100 yards.

If you used the original cylinder out of the gun... the only difference would be rim thickness on the 22 mag case, and that should be minimal.  I'd pull the crane/cylinder completely apart and ensure there are no machining leftovers in there--grit, filings, etc.

I used orginal cylinder took apart cleaned twice and without shells in cylinder works fine double or single action soon as snap caps or live ammo put in cylinder will not rotate.Took cylinder out of gun installed shells turned upside down they fell out no problem I think rim on 22 mag may be to thick not allowing cylinder to rotate.

Does the cylinder turn ok with chambered wtih .22lr shells?  If it does then it has to be in the rim of the case.  Measure them both with a caliper and see what you come up with or fill the chambers with mag. shells and look at the rear of the cylinder and see if the case is hitting the face fo the recoil shield when locked up.

When you do this the cylinder has to be turned down to give it the propper head space because the rim is thicker on a Magnum. It's not much, .003" or .004", but it enough to jam the cylinder.

I had Kieth @ DW do mine, and it's slick as snot......range-time

It was in the $350 to $400 range best I remember for new LR cylinder timed and installed and the old cylinder re-worked for WRM about 4 or 5 years ago. The cylinder was in $250 range IIRC and it also required sending the frame & cylinder back and the work was done promptly and I had gun back in 2 weeks, maybe 2.5 weeks at most.

The reason I did it was I had a bad cylinder most likely PO had used drill and bore brush to clean cylinder and over-sized it unknowingly. Anyway Keith said it was almost out to WMR size and might not be saved, but it ended up being saved. I almost wish now I'd had another crane and ejector done for easier change out, but that would have been another couple hundred dollars invested.

talked to cylinder and slide they said maching front would change timing.I found out .002 is clearence normaly between shell head and back plate.I think that recess on extractor is not cut deep enough so I re rented cylinder reamer and a head space go gauge, could not get any one local to do it so I'm going to do it myselfgoodluck

I didn't think couple thousandth would have effected timing, but now I think about it I guess it would. I guess after retiring 20 years ago some of my training is getting a bit rusty.
