Well, I opened my big mouth on the firing range, So I will tell you what I have found out with lil gun powder. This data should be used for limited use in a strong 357 mags like, Colt Python, King Cobra, DW and Red and Black Hawks, SW 28 and Freedom Arms and Ext. All right guys, Lead only no gas checks or jacketed after 15 grains. Start at 14.8 of Lil gun (Less for GC and Jacketed) and work it up. My King Cobra will max out at 15.0 grains. 15 gains is max loading listed a hogden. If you want accuracy and lose only about 30 fps use a small pistol primer. 180 gain lasercast a small pistol primer and 15.3 will do about 1430 and has ONLY 7 FPS Deviation. Yes it is very accurate. The same with a magnum small pistol primer hit 1486. Now that was a python too. The 8 inch 15-2 was 1407 small pistol and 1447 in magnum. IF You Go Higher Than 15.5 You Will Start Splitting Brass!!! This Powder is the bastard child of H110 and 2 or 3 tenths of a grain is huge, in velocity and pressure. Most guns will hit the 15 or the 15.3 loads. As long a the primer is flattened, but still rounded as it tucks into the brass everything good. If it is mashed flat all the way across, back it off. You can expect to shoot a 1000 rounds of this or better, before you end up at your gunsmith for shims and yoke stretching. So hunting white tail or a few rams at 200 meters, Pin shooting this round shows it self to be a winner. If you want a sane load 13.8 = 1290-1300,  14.5=1330 -1340 group good and have no real pressure signs.

While playing Lou Reed in the backround…Smile

I don't get it, I would much rather use GCs or Jacketed at these velocities and pressure to keep the lead core from leaving skid marks down the barrel. Maybe I'm missing something, that's why I like the DW forum, your always learning something.

Not that I have any desire to load past max loads  listed by the complany that makes the powder but that's just me I guess. It would be like propping my boat to run over max RPM. Not good. I love my boat as much as my DW's.

(sorry about the quote marks and color, I tried to cancel the quote, didn't work)

Palo,

I tend to agree.  If I need a harder hitting bullet, I'll switch to a larger or more powerful caliber.  To each his own, and for me I like my guns to last more than 1000 rounds.

The reason for lead only is pressure, Gas checked will hit in my dan at 15.1 with a small pistol and 15.0 with a jacketed. But in lead will do 15.3 and higher with reasonable pressure. As for skidding and leading. No difference in that at all from a target load to hot load. Remember wheel lead can run over 1800 fps and hardened I have read loading over 2200 FPS with out gas checks. Leading is caused by running the wrong diameter for that barrel, and the flash temp of the powder you are using. The secret is to a hot fast load is time and patience and allot of testing. I am fortunate, from my bench to my small range is about 30 yards. I can work out bugs in hours in stead of days. If you start out with a lead bullet and a small pistol primer at 14.7 grain and work up for your gun, A 357 will look like a 360DW or a 41 Mag with little time spent working up such a load. The load is something that every one should have 20 rounds or so lying around for personal defense or hunting.

P.S. If you have leading issues carry a brass brush and scrub while still warm with no solvents.,(Dry Brush) it will come right out.
