I use an LBT cast 200gr cast gas checked bullet over 16 gr IMR 4227 as my deer load and have found it to be very effective and accurate. I can ring the gong at 200yds at the outdoor range, and have taken deer out to 100yds. I would start with Veral Smith's book; Jacketed Performance With Cast Bullets, and the Lee reloading manual. If you are going to cast they are a must and save much over buying bullets. They LBT molds produce the most accurate bullets available. Search lbtmoulds.com for Veral's sight.
I know you've been hunting already and hope you did well. Just saw this question. The best load I have found for my DW and Ruger 357 Max is a cast Lyman #358627 over 19.2 W296 using a small rifle primer and hard crimp. This bullet is a 215 gr. SWC with gas check. The load gets me aroung 1600 fps. I suggest that you read the article about cast bullets in the Max by Glen E. Fryxell. Just Google him for all of his excellent articles. Good luck next year.
