Mike Bellm says this about the 357 Maximum, not sure if the Super Mag
is any diffrent when it comes to twist rate, anyway here it is:
"Twist rates:
You may specify the twist rate you prefer based on the bullet weights you intend to shoot.
There is no "need" at all for 1-14" twist rate for bullets 200 gr. and lighter, though the 1-14" twist which is most common for .35 cal. has proven itself quite well. Going to a longer twist rate tends to give somewhat higher velocity and something of an edge in accuracy as well.
I usually specify 1-15" for .357 Max., though I am leaning toward making 1-16" twist rate standard for the Max.
1-18" twist will handle up through 180 gr. bullets.
1-20" twist will handle up through 160 gr. bullets and is the twist rate David White used to get the outstanding groups shown on this page. "
