Good morning    In 2 weeks I will be returning to East Central Illinois for a few months.  During that time I will be adding a 414 cylinder to my 375 SM frame and doing the machining on a 8" 41 mag barrel to fit the 375 shroud.

So what are your suggestions on Loads ?   I have 180 - 240 grain molds.  I will have access to a 260 grain mold.  I have WW and linetype.  Looking for ideas where to start and what direction to head.

Mike,

That is quite an undertaking.  I wish you well in your machining endeavors.  As far as loads, I have only ever experimented with 210 grain jacketed Hornady's and Sierra's at this point and a few 170 grain Sierras.  Powders have been H4227, H-110 and AA-1680.  There is a document in the library here under articles and reloading data there are several articles for the 414.  If you join the DWCA I believ there is an additional early article there on the 414.  I do not have any magic loads at this time yet, but these suggestions would be good starting locations.  I know another member here IHMSA 80X80 has a 414 he has shot alot and may be better at providing some tried loads.

Hi Mike,

I've not tried any cast bullets in my .414SM's, only jacketed 210 and 220 grain bullets. AA-1689 was preferred by my Palmer gun, while the custom Encore barrels liked Lil Gun powder best.

Hello  again and thanks Fellers.

I have used 1680, 4227 and 296 in my 375 SM so am planing on those powders.  I also launch the Lyman 375248 (255gr) so I was thinking about the same loading for the 414 with the 265 gr.  But I will search about.  I knew when I stsrted this journey there was not many 414 shooters.  I just like 41´s.

Unfortunately the reason there are not many of us 414 shooters is that there are only a little over 125 414's in existance to my best knowledge.  It is a great caliber.  I believe of those that have published their belongings here there may be about 6 of us that stated we have 414's.  It would be great to hear about your results of the cast loadings.

Good morning   Well I sure will do that.  I have been around casting since I was 4 (my dad) and grew up with lead loaded cartriges.  Been molding my own since I got out of the Army in 74 (Armor) .  I do not think I have fired a Jacket bullet out of my 375.

I am one of those who SHOULD have got a 414 when they were available.  When they were I was busy collecting US Army rifles.  Then the 414´s dissapeered...

So that is one of my projects... A switch barrel/cylinder Super Mag.  Although I think once the 414 is assembled the 375 is going to take a long NAP.

Mike .. I must admit.. I know nothing  about  414.. so in doing my google search I came upon this site...

http://www.lasc.us/RangingShotDW414SM.htm#top

very informative... I don't know when it was printed..but it refers to the 414 as being still made by the "new" Dan Wesson company.. again.. I doubt this is CZ..but I just do not know..

what is interesting is at the bottom of the page is reloading data.. powder types, primer used.. etc.. plus it says they were using a 300 grain whopper .. so this may be a good source of info for  you..

Central Illinois huh... too bad... but you should be ok with your 414 in tow... just kidding I just moved from the western suburbs of Chicago.. to the mountains of western North Carolina partly to get away from the crazies up in Illinois.. not the least of which is our new Prez... oh well !!

At least we know who is REALLY in control.. right !!

Oh yeah.. if now one has told you.. primers are in very very short supply now... so advance warning .. try and order some NOW.. it may take a long time to get them..unless you get lucky.. if you need some.. ask us on this forum we may be able to help a brother in need out..

In HIM,

Wayne

PS.. I understand your desire to mess with this..... but have you considered a plain ole..44 mag... ?? everything is readily avail... but then again... if your into it.. there is no reasoning with you.. and I understand and respect that...hahahahaha.

That article was about the Norwich Dan Wessons, before CZ bought them.

Good morning    So far the best batch of info on the 414 SM reloading IS the info put out by LASC... not a big surprise.  That is one well versed group of reloaders.

Thanks Everyone... I will let ya know how things progress.

Mike in Peru (8days)   God Bless ya´ll.

Ok, second try.  First upload failed.  I'm a new member and have a 414 and I'm preparing to start handloading for it.

Anybody aware of any 414SM loading data beyond the LASC article above?

missionary 5155 Mike, did you ever finish your 414 hybrid?  How's it shoot.  Did you find any heavy hardcast bullets you like?  What loads?

Thanks,
Perfectspeed

He did get his hybrid finished. The search function seems to have a headache right now, or I'd post you a link to his thread.Wink

I'll see if I can find the thread the hard way.

We need to see some Cool Pics of the 414.  Not many of them around you know.  There are a few loading discussions in the relaoding department, they may be a bit well aged, but there nonetheless.  If you PM me your email I can send some other stuff your way when time allows also.  Great to see another new member and fellow 414SM owner, Oh and we need to see the Pics, did I mention that?Big Grin

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Supermagfan,

So just checking back and see this message...Hmmm.

Is this a "show me" site?  I guess to have any credibility here I have to prove it.  Ok, I'll make you a deal.  I'll go home tonight and take a couple pics of it and try to figure out how to get them in here this weekend.

I bought it new in '98 and finally received it in the fall of '99.  I couldn't get brass and load data wasn't available so I put it on ice in my safe.  For a decade.  I followed Gates/DWF development back then.  I have some of his original brass.  Then, I got side tracked with divorce, new girlfriend, new wife, archery, scuba diving, motorcycle racing, kids in college, and skydiving.  Now I'm older, slower and the shooting itch has returned.   Went to the range w/ both mys sons a couple weeks ago with some original Boy Scout Commemorative .22 rifles and my custom 1911 .45ACP and the .44 Desert Eagle and double tapped my way to an afternoon of happiness. Uzi I hadn't been shooting in several years.  Ah the smell of gunpowder and checking groups and picking up brass...it was good.

Didn't take the SM because I only have 47 rounds loaded.

If I do this, post the 7414 pics that is, will you help me with picking some good hardcast gas checked bullets and some load info?  250, 265, to 275 grains?  I'm thinking of starting with Lil Gun.  I got 250 starline cases sent to me the other day.  I need primers, bullets and powder now.  I can't believe how prices have gone up.  Thanks Obama.  Do you have good reliable sources for powder, and primers.  I'd also like to find a hood for my front sight.  Mine has a patridge without hood.  Thanks,

Perfectspeed

PS. What is: "PM me your email"?

PerfectSpeed:

First Welcome to the DWF Sign.

Next, PM means Personal (Private) Message and it is entirely a pert of this web site and there does not enpose your email to anyone.  It also allows you to give private to one individual without others having access to it.

Can't wait to see your pics.  You also might want to post pics of your complete collection in the members collections forum.

Perfect Speed,

You are not required to post pics for me to send you info that is your decision to post pics.  I will as time allows send you what I have, most of it has been provided by many others over the years.  Just give me some time.  Glad you joined us and I hope that shooting bug sticks with you, there is nothing like the smell of gunpowder at the range after touching off the trigger of a Dan.  As an old saying went "It just doesn't get any better than this"

All,

Thanks again for the help.  Anybody know of an available supply house for AA1680 and H Lil Gun powders?  How about magnum pistol primers?  Also looking for a recommendation for hardcast heavy bullets with gas checks.

I posted the pics in the section for new members when I found some additional feedback in that section to my original questions.  Here's one of them here.  Don't want to clutter up the site since the other two pics can be seen in the new members area.  I included a pic of my original Dan Wesson shoulder rig I will use for hunting next season.
