Now that I have gotten back into the loading mode for the first time in too long I am in need of some expertise.  I have only ever loaded the 45 Colt with very mild loads to shoot in my father's revolvers.  I now have a DW 745 and wish to make it capable of taking deer confidently.  Any tried and true loads using Hornady 240 grain XTP's or equal out there that anyone can share?

Im only loading 45 Colt for my Uberti Cattleman which has to be on the mild side, im sure your 745 can take much stronger loads. Theres tons of loading info out there on 45 Colt. Try Graybeards + Beartooth also Hodgdon Reloading has bout the best site going...sorry cant help with loads but this can get ya started.

I typically reload with Hodgdon powders, so I use the reloading data on their web site as a starting point.  Using this data, I loaded some 45 Colt that were slightly warmer than 44 Mag.  I found them enjoyable to shoot and saw no signs of over-pressure.

Use the "Ruger, Freedom Arms, T/C" data only.

I was using 240 grain bullet over ~27.5 grains of Lil'Gun powder.

Thanks guys,

I realize there is a lot of data out there and I'll look into it, I also realize that most of the data is for weaker older firearms and the Dan's can take much more that is why I was seeking some proven loads.  I had read quite a bit after I posted this and like Wayne, I use alot of Hodgen powders.  I'll probably start with this line to dial in some hunting loads.  Thanks for the help!  It is appreciated.

Do yourself a favor. With over-standard max loads, run a magic marker over the base of the brass just in case- that way you'll know instantly on trying to load if you grab some by mistake for weaker guns.
