Finally got everything, still waiting on H110, but got some CFE pistol powder. Anyhow I made my first bullet tonight,.357 JHP 6.4 gr of CFE, well I still got all my fingers, nose and 14-2 lived !!!Sounded and felt like a 357 !!
Question 1.
On factory 357 mag and max I see no crimp. And the one I made I did not crimp. Fit was tight. Any need to crimp ??
2- any problem with mag primers in 38s ??
3- 44 & 445s are crimped, correct?
TIA

Thanks, kind sir. I have Hornady dies and was putting a slight taper crimp on them, adjusted die down 1/8 turn and have about .0015" crimp. And seating/crimping happens at the same time once set right. And the dies do 38 spl - 357 max !! Popped out 50 357 mag rds today at 6.8 gr of CFE. With no help, other than net and specs. Not bad for first time. Only swelled 3 trying to adj.
I thought 44 & 445 had roll crimp, but apears not.
Again, will sp mag primers be ok in 38 spl ??
Got my cave set up pretty good. I'll get some pics.later.

As long as the primer seats flush or a little recessed they will work. 38 s usually use small pistol primers, 357.l mag I usually use small magnum pistol primers but have also used small pistol with good results.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

Cool, I'll give them a try soon. When H110 gets here I'm going to load some 357 Max in used Jamison brass.
180 gr XTP HP, then on to 44 & 445, w/240 JFP. A friend has a Marlin 444, will 44 mag [rcbs carbide] dies be long enough to do 444 ??
Here's my setup, got stuff all organised and comfy, well lit, tunes The Dillon shaker is the bomb !!

Generally semi-auto pistol cartridge's (9mm, .45 ACP, etc.) case mouth will be "straight", which is a taper crimp. Revolver cartridge's (.357, .44, etc.) case mouths will be pinched inward; this is a roll crimp. Auto handgun cartridges use a taper crimp because they typically headspace on the case mouth. Revolver cartridges headspace on the rim, so the exact location of the case mouth is less critical than it is in autos.
A taper crimp is basically a friction fit and "tightens" the casing around the side of the bullet, but does not turn the case mouth in -- essentially, it removes the slight belling that occurred with the expanding die to allow the bullet to smoothly enter the case.
A roll crimp tool rolls the top of case mouth into the bullet, usually into a cannelure (crimping groove), which is more of a mechanical lock and tighter than a taper crimp. This helps slow burning powders build pressure for efficient burning and to prevent bullet jump (bullet movement) under recoil, which is good for magnum loads. It can't be used on bullets without the groove.

Thanks for the info Stinger. As I said I was putting a slight crimp on, but not enough. I really like the Hornady 357 dies. But RCBS 44 dies had more explanatory instructions on taper and roll crimp. I get it, and am getting better on set up. Made some 125gr 357 rds w/7.5 gr of CFE. Got between .0015 - .002" crimp, any more and case crushes. So I think I'm good !!
Now to give them a try
Most time was sorting 357, 38 & 45s all in one box. Got most seperated in cigar boxes now. Wife gets them at pipe store. They're cool and most are wood, one is called Chillin' Moose. Pretty fancy. I'll get a pic tomorrow.

Another cool thing my wife gets, are cigar boxes. I’m using some to sort brass by cal.Not much brass then? I sort brass in cheap 5-gallon buckets.
Got more than you think. Gonna move this to reloading before I get scolded
I have a large box w/ 1000 -1500, 38-357s, sitll after sorting for hours, mostly 45s and clean cases or what I sorted for current needs, I put in the cigar boxes, till ready. And I got a BUNCH of boxes.
Some if them are pretty big, and they close tight and keep out bs. and stack in work bench drawers !
I'm not using the Chillin' Moose box, it's too cool to mess up

While you sort the 45 ACPs, understand there are two sizes of primer pockets on them and they need further sorting by small and large primer.
Huh, I didn't know that. I have a few hundred range brass I've saved, now I need to sort 'em out...and then get off my butt & reload them all.

Thanks for the heads up, Ron.
Good info from Starline, Stinger. Did not quite get what they were meaning about 445s, or was that just a case example ??
Good thing bout cigar boxes, is you can put whatever in them and they seal up good. Gun parts, body parts ??
I use bread pans for car part, nuts/bolts etc, and have an old filing cabinet they fit in nicely.
Got my H110 yesterday and made some 357s w/158g XTP and 16.5g charge. Got the crimp process down better, I had bent a few cases before, and I think my prob. was, I was too concerned about COL than bullet seated to crimp ring.
In other words a true statement would be. COL can be a little shorter, but crimp ring must be down far enough to line up w/case mouth, correct ?? After setting depth to ring [some about .003"-.005" shorter than spec], I had no case crushing.
And all cases I used measured 1.280", some were longer and I set them aside to trim later.
