Jerry- That two piece barrel tool is easily the dumbest idea to ever come out of Dan Wesson. My first 15-2 (first gun, bought new in 1977) came with this tool and I managed to strip out the barrel nut pretty quickly. It was sent out to DW for warranty repair. I was much more careful thereafter using this tool, but never really liked or trusted it.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I have to agree, Steve, which is so strange coming from a company that engineered a fine revolver. It's as if they all took a break and the high school mailroom boy decided to engineer the wrench while they were out grabbing lunch. They eventually got it right and EWK has a great wrench. Thankful for guys like Eric.

I think (or want to think) that they were focused on making a remarkable revolver.
Maybe the "mechanics" of the barrel nut removal got lost in the grand concept. In the early years before the DW concept was recognized or understood, they fixed my gun, I'm guessing many more as well.
The good news is that an early "brain fart" did not derail the basic concept, nor did the following stupidity of the plastic barrel tool.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I'm sorry but, I visually can't understand how the clamp is applied to the gun to remove the barrel nut. Can someone draw a picture for me please? the photo above some to look like one end of the clamp is on the trigger Guard and the other is at the end of the barred, thus covering up the access to the nut.
If you're going to drink, don't drive. Don't even putt.

I'll take a stab at this...EWK offers two styles of barrel wrench. One is round and the other is a hex drive with six flat sides. The clamp is used to hold the hex drive in place firmly against the barrel nut, and then the crescent wrench is used on the flat sides to loosen the stuck nut. Hope that help...

The fixed end of the clamp is pressing on the forcing cone, the end with the handle is tightened against the end of the barrel wrench which is inserted & pressing tightly into the barrel nut notches. Then I used the crescent wrench to turn the barrel nut wrench. I can take more detailed pictures if that will help.

Here - this should help. In my experience, it's always been the simplest, most effective method for breaking loose a stuck barrel nut.

I tried this removal method on my .357 SuperMag and 10" barrel after the retaining ring notches were stripped while attempting to remove the barrel. Unfortunately for me it did not work. Too tight. Off to the gunsmith it went.
Since I have two of these guns I tried to insure this won't happen to the other one by doing the following:
1) Applied anti-seize grease to the barrel and lock ring threads.
2) Avoid tightening the lock ring when the barrel is hot from shooting. This is the main reason my other gun seized up.
3) Added a Muzzle Brake from EWK arms which means the barrel is locked in with the baffle inner piece instead of a lock ring. The baffle has a wrench with much more leverage and is impossible to strip. I will also add a brake to my other gun once it has returned from the Smith.

I thought I would add something to this great and useful thread , as its only a matter of time before a Dan Wesson owner will experience this situation .
The new-to-me M740 came with three barrel nuts , one of which was a factory design with only the two slots ( unlike the EWK version with 4 ) that was buggered on the side needed for removal . I did not notice that it was rounded-off before installing it . Worked awesome on the installation , not so much on the removal .
Using EWK’s excellent barrel nut wrench , I modified it by putting it on a lathe with a 5C collet and drilling a .150 “ diameter through hole ( on center ) for a 10 inch length of stainless 6-32 threaded rod . On the ends I had a couple of #6 flat washers , a couple of faced off chucks of brass ( to prevent marring , galling and burrs ) and two nuts …. I put un-shrunk shrink tubing on the threaded rod before inserting into the bore to protect the rifling , crown and forcing cone .
Finger tighten the nuts so there is slight pressure to prevent the barrel wrench from camming out .
It works fantastic . The stripped and buggered barrel nut was broken free in less than ½ turn .
I think this thread should be a sticky if it isn’t already one that is created addressing this issue …. I tried using the search function to possibly find the topic , but the results from the search had no relevance to stripped barrel nuts ?

Which models have an index pin that fits into the shroud? I think I’ve read every thread on stuck barrels. One of the “last resorts” is to turn the entire barrel and shroud off the frame but I see no mention of what happens when there’s a index/alignment pin.
15-2 that I know of.
