Just finished the Average Joe job on my 14-2.  When I begin to tighten the side plate, the crane starts to bind.  Have disassembled, triple checked the crane clip spring, reassembled.  Plate came off pretty simply - no prying or rust.  It just tightens up the crane swing, but it still moves.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

Hmmm , I have one thought. You know the little half circle retainer that holds the crane in? Make sure it is seating in its little groove properly. Maybe remove it and turn it around, I seem to remember one of my Dans has one that the little retainer only wanted to fit one way.

Yeah, that's what I was calling the crane clip spring. Took pics during the disassembly and its in the way it was.  This is why I'm baffled.  Appreciate it though.

Make sure you have some decent lube in there. ATF (Auto Trans Fluid) is great for these guns. Light synthetic engine oil is good too, as well as Rem oil in most cases. Some DW's prefer their own special lube variety.lol2smile

The concern is that as I begin to tighten the sideplate screws, the binding begins.  So that suggests that the alignment is putting some pressure on the hinge.  Can't see how exactly that is happening, but that is what's happening.

Hmmm. Challenging. How about this. Take all the guts out again, except the crane. No cylinder stop or trigger or crane retainer or anything. Then try putting the sideplate on and tightening it. See if crane still binds. (without retainer it should actually slide in and out). If it has good movement, add parts back in and try the sideplate to see if you can narrow down to one area that is causing your trouble.

Time consuming I know but I cant think of what would cause your binding. Let us know if you come up with anything or make any advancements.

That makes a lot of sense.  Thanks.  I'll do that this weekend and get back with the results.

foghorn you are a wise man.  This technique should be passed on to all "Average Joe" jobbers.occasion

Actually, Step 6 does mention maybe taking a picture, but Coop's comment sort of drove me to go back and Boldface in Color that part of Step 6. Couldn't hurt!

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
