Does anybody have a DW with the hammer bobbed completely off? I remember we saw one on GB awhile back with a semi-bob done to it.
I was thinking of completely bobbing one of my 14-2's hammers--just not sure if I will get reliable ignition with the lighter mass hammer.
I'd probably remove the single action notch also and make it a pure DAO. I love the looks of this ruger..
I thought I'd toss this out to the masses before I destroy a DW hammer ... Then again, I could probably have a replacement made -- where's EWK's phone number ?

But wouldn't a lighter hammer accelerate quicker, and possibly reach a greater velocity? I guess this could depend on weather an unmodified hammer is still accelerating when is strikes the firing pin. If it is, then a lighter hammer could have similar kinetic energy.
Where are the mechanical engineers or physicists when you need one.

Interesting project. I'd weigh that hammer before and after to determine how much weight is lost. As a layman, I think that a lighter hammer means less inertia to overcome and possibly more velocity to help overcome the lost weight. Also, when you look at the hammer, there is still a lot of mass remaining.
Fortunately, a Mechanical Engineer that I know pretty well (more than pretty well, she's my daughter) is good at helping me with hard stuff like this.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I saw that the minute it was listed--tried to do an offline buy, but the seller wanted to let it ride...

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
If it were me, I would get a hold of a second hammer to do it on, this way you can always switch back.
I have two S&W Mod 36 J frames that are bobbed for front pocket carry...the second one is stainless which I just picked up...love them both dearly.

The initial cut... ... I'll do some grinding on it next to blend the back to the frame as best I can.
Should be a fun project... If it fires reliably, I'll give it a super tune this winter. I'm in the market for a beater 14-2 or 714. I want to "melt" it (remove all the corners/sharp edges) and come up with the perfect DW carry gun.

Do you have a welder? You could add a little metal between the cut off spur & the top of the hammer & maybe gain some weight back. Plus, it would make it look more clean...more like it was meant to be there.
I do have a nice MIG welder, just not sure if welding on gun parts is my area of expertise yet ...
I agree it would look better if I could get it to blend with the back of the frame--If you look at that area on a DW, it will not be flush with a standard bob job.

Well, if it ends up looking more like a bobbed DW AC style hammer, that would still be pretty cool.
Now if you could find some cast rocker arms (or simialar) to practice the 'ol MIG on, that may just be the ticket.

Do the pencil test. Open the cylinder, point the gun strait up, drop a pencil down the barrel with the eraser resting on the firing pin and dry fire it. Note how far the pencil flies in the air before and after.
* double action is a lot softer than single action because than hammer doesn't travel as far back.

I'll call her the "Humpback" DW ....
Did some initial cutting on the hammer today and this is how she ended up--I still need to do some minor contour work and then final polishing before the Blue.
The stock hammer is 573.6 grains; the new bobbed hammer is currently 492 grains. Loss of 81.6 grains. Only some range testing will tell if we have a winner or not. More to come...
