Does anybody here know of anybody or any company that does wood checkering? I have a smooth walnut grip that I would really like to have checkering on the sides. Not fancy or showy, just to provide better grip.

Thanks

You may want to consider a new grip. I looked into this a while back (I was considering buying a machine to cut and checker grips, stocks, etc.) and found it to be pretty pricy.  $25 - $100 plus shipping both ways to checker a grip on a moderately expensive handgun is not a cost effective solution to me.

However, here are a couple of places I did check into:

http://www.customdiamonds.biz/

http://www.checkering.com/

I can't vouch for either as I never engaged them.

Yeah, I know a hand cut checkering job could get pricey. I searched to 'net and pretty much came up with the 2 sites that you did. I may contact them.

I realize it would get awful pricey, but am thinking of 'treating' myself and maybe end up with a very unique and practical grip.

I just wish I had the talent and patience to learn to do it, I suspect hand-cut checkering is a dying art.

I feel ya.

I looked into buying an engraving machine a while back. Not so much for pistols, etc. I like the old fashioned hand engraving. I know some think it is silly, but then again so is standing on a frozen lake fishing or bundling up like the Pilssbury doughboy to trek into the frozen tundra on a snowmobile (grew up in MN; thoroughly enjoy the FLA winters more.)

Back on point. The machine was well over $10K. It did however do what I needed (engraving the Class III weapons I build / manufacture) but for $50 I can outsource it to someone else. It did engrave wood, too but seemed like a lot of work to set up and then clean up. The local jeweler has the upgraded model. He paid $18K for it so I let him engrave my parts as needed.

Here is an old guy located in WV that I have used to do some engraving. He does do gun stocks and grips. He did the two  Colt Pythons in the picture below.
