I have read Superdan's thread on crowning.  Additionally I have googled crowning and come up with two useful articles:

http://yarchive.net/gun/barrel/barrel_crowning.html

http://riflestocks.tripod.com/targetcrown.html

What are your thoughts about crowning, what would be a nice middle of the road crowning for both target and home use?  Are there any other schools of thought I should be aware of?

I have thought about cutting 11 degree crowns on a few Dan Wesson barrels to see what happens.  I think the worst that can happen is it will improve the look Cool

I had a 24" heavy target barrel on an AR type rifle.  The length and weight were too much, so I cut the barrel down to 18".  The barrel originally had a stepped crown and after cutting it down, I machined an 11 degree crown on it.  Before and after accuracy is rather subjective, but the rifle does seem to be more accurate now - easily shooting 1 MOA out to 300 yards.

On an AR15, 18" barrel is about the shortest one can go with a rifle length gas system and still have reliability.

OOOK, I seem to have posted a topic nobody wants to share info on, or have I stumped the knowledge base of the DWF Sign???

Someone has to know something else.

Mox,

I certainly don't have anything to offer here but the articles were interesting.

I look forward to hear what others have to say!

All we know has already been posted in other threads 🙂  If you want I can run out to the garage and crown another barrel real quick 😉

I can tell you that a crown is the ticket to tight groups. Now most crowns on my rifles was the last thing we did to dial it in. Now superdan has a very good technique that seems to improve groups on all DW's we tried it on. Now if you want to dial in your DW, You can run groups at 15 yards off a rest, with the best shooting load you have for it. Then use your cylinder gap to help dial it in even better. Then with that knowledge, you can try some different crowns and make your DW sing for you. Just do not run out of barrel trying so many.lol2 As a rule of thumb, shoot a few rounds and look at the crown and see if the powder burns are equal all the way around.

I find the discussion on crowning interesting and it sounds like something I will explore at some time. I know very little about crowning, other than what I have read here. I just thought I would mention the slight irony of this as, if my memory serves me, I believe I read that Dan Wesson himself did not like to crown barrels and all the early DW's came with squared off muzzles. Just thought I would throw that out and see if I could stir up some more discussion. He He He .DWF Sign
