Got my first DW, a 15-2, last week and headed to the range with it Friday. After I got it, it had the 6" barrel on it, I swapped it out for the 4"... shimmed it up and torqued it down.
When I was shooting I noticed the action would tie-up on two of the cylinders... almost on one, definitely on another. I could still cycle it single-action, but something wasn't right.
After I got it home, I broke the barrel down and noticed when I shim it up, one part of the cylinder is higher than the other side... the cylinder is not perfectly square (in relation to the barrel.) In the foggy recesses of my mind, I remember reading that you should shim the barrel and then check cylinder rotation with the shim in place to test for proper set.
A few questions...
Is this typical of DW cylinders... one side being higher than the other? How is it best to set the clearance... .006" all the way around, or sort of even it out? ...or do I have a bigger problem?
I will say I was impressed with the accuracy and recoil (or lack therof,) even shooting 158grn JHP's over H110 in the 4" barrel. Once I break the action down and give it a good clean, I expect to have quite a shooter!

yep , you got it, the cylinder face is a little off. I usually set mine at .003 on
the high spot or the tightest one. Also if you jam that feeler gauge in there
to set the gap you will push the cylinder back on the spring loaded cylinder
detente ball and get a false reading. Gauge should have a very slight drag
feel when set right and double check after you tighten the barrel nut.

Also if the muzzle threads or the barrel nut thread are not clean, the nut can "drag' and cause the barrel to turn in the frame. Thus tightening the barrel more than you expected. Some have taken to opening the crane and placing a thumb on the frame end of trhe barrel while tightening the barrel nut.
This can also happen with EWK barrel nuts as they are machined to exact tolerances and drag some (until broken in). He may have changed this by now though.
I love 158gr over a nice slow powder (H110 or LilGun). Feels wonderful in the hand.

Ahhh! That makes sense. I did have it wedged in the pretty good...
As I say, it all needs a good cleaning... maybe this weekend! I ordered a EWK 4" barrel and a spring kit, in case I find something when I pull the sideplate off.
Thanks, guys!
