I bought a Dan Wesson .357 recently, used of course but it looked great.  I took it to a gunsmith to install a spring kit. He called me and said we had a problem. There was a piece missing that could cause the cylinder to fall out of the frame. A small part, about 1/4 in long. He said he would try to find a replacement part.  He didn't give the name of the part. I've known this man for years and he makes custom firearms. Any thoughts or info would be most helpful.

Respectfully,

John Marke

The part is called a cylinder stop. Early model  DW had this as a separate piece. Later guns it was incorporated as an integral part of the sideplate. I have made them from steel rod and also have purchased them online. Your gunsmith should be able to make one. Many DW owners have one or two as "spares"  They were a light press fit in the sideplate and its not that unusual to have one work out. Good Luck

DW will have them too. The shipping will be more than the part so maybe order whatever else you want or need. Get a couple or three. I suspect it is from pounding on the ejector rod to dislodge stuck cases. Try to hold the cylinder if you have stuck cases so the force is not taken on the cylinder stop. It may involve a little fitting. Go to "The Average Joe Tuneup" in Gunsmithing to learn how to take care of your Dan yourself. They were designed to not need gunsmiths for most repairs. It is actually very easy, after the first time. You may need to loctite it in. Do not push it in past the inside of the sideplate. Do you have a barrel tool. They are essential to set the barrel cylinder gap.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, I have gauges to set the barrel gap. I owned quite a few DWs but had to sell them when times got rough. Thanks to Ole Dog and hugelk for the help.
