I receintly aquired a modell 744 that I can , with very little effort, rotate the cylinder backwards (hammer down).
While I can take apart & bulid a 1911 blindfolded, revolver mechanics have always been a black art mystery to me. Even though my first handgun was a model 740 many, many years ago.
I have disassembled the revolver,& don't see anything that looks excessively worn or broken, but am not sure exactly what I am looking for. I just know none of my other DWs will do this.
What controls the cylinder lockup, the bolt? Is the only cure a trip back to DW?
This one revolver has been a pita since I bought it, (loong story), but I am into it for too much to just dump it & move on. If I'm going to keep it, I want it functional.
Can someone a little more knowledgeable in revolver mechanics enlighten me please?
Thanks.

I don't know if this applies to the OP, but the cylinder latch spring is very easy:
On an unloaded revolver:
1) Remove the small hex head screw on the front of the crane (latch retaining screw, duh)
2) Slide the latch off, along with the spring, which is in a U shape
3) Be amazed at the amount of lint and crud in the spring and latch
4) Clean everything, including the notch in the frame that the latch locks into (might want to use a sharp pointed probe to really clean the muck out of this area too)
5) Lube lightly and reassemble
Unfortunately, on my Nickel 14, some moron lost the screw and replaced it with a roll pin-arrgghh
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I have a 15-2 that does that also. When I push down on the cylinder stop it does not seem to have much resistance. Could the spring need replacement and is that a difficult job? (Shoot)
Spring replacement is super simple on the stop--just remove the sideplate, the crane lock and slide the cylinder out.
