I noticed today on one of my 44 magnum Dans the gun seems to work fine in single and double action. I have shot the gun several times. I noticed though if you grab the cylinder try to turn it counter clockwise it will come unlocked and spin somewhat. I checked my other guns and 2 others seem to have the same problems. They will not lock into place and will spin backwards. Any thoughts on what's going on? Is it as simple as the arm that moves the cylinder is worn down and needs replaced? I have shot the 3 guns that this is going on with they all seem to shoot fine and lock up when the hammer is pulled back into a locked position in single action. Thanks!

So this is with the hammer down correct?
If so, it sounds like a bolt or bolt plunger/spring issue. The hand should not factor into this if the trigger isn't pulled or hammer cocked.

I can't get a large frame or supermag gun to rotate counter clockwise no matter what I do. With the hammer down and trigger released, the cylinder should be locked in place in both direction of rotation.
It sounds to me like a problem with the bolt or spring. Could be worn bolt, weak/damaged bolt plunger spring. I think it's time to drop the trigger group and see what's going on.

It's the Bolt Plunger Spring that we're talking about. It could be the bolt is worn but more than likely, a good cleaning will allow it to return fully into the cylinder cut. If not, then a new spring may be in order. If that doesn't work, possibly a new bolt.

Stan, you can get all the parts Ron mentioned on eBay pretty cheap. I did this with a 375vSM last winter because theccyl had a lot of slop when in locknup, really tightened it up.

I was going to go to Florida to get a hands-on lesson on my Large Frame disassembly. Then life got in the way.
Murray College on Oklahoma has week-long gunsmithing classes in June. But I doubt the instructors have Dan Wesson experience.
Maybe we all just need to meet @ the NRA Whittington Center this summer to exchange knowledge , shooting
, and adult beverages
?
Add a curriculum to cover two half days of class time. Elect an experienced member as an instructor, or invite Keith or Bob Collins to ride his motorcycle down from New York.....and we all cover their travel expenses to come teach what we're too scared to try alone.
just thinking out loud
Scout, if the Florida trip was to visit me be aware I have never taken apart a large or Supermag frame. Just many dozens of small frame guns. I wouldn't mind trying it though using the Forum tutorial. I now have a guest apartment upstairs and a new roomy gun room to play in

I think most springs, including the bolt plunger spring are the same as small frame guns. I need to research that. Stinger, let's work on some large frame and Supermags. My new gun room has space for both of us. I have a 744 that was destroyed by LE and sold as a parts kit. I found all the necessary parts(the trigger group) but haven't rebuilt it yet.

OK new info has come to my attention. I sold the fixed barrel to Scorpio and he found that the crane lock was broken. He replaced it and it seems to have fixed the problems. As I said (I think I said it) This seems to be only happening to Palmer large frames or Supermag frames in my Collection. You all may want to check your Palmer large frame or Supermag frames if you have one and see if you can rotate the cylinder counter clockwise with the hammer down. I now am wondering if it's a problem with this part in the Palmer guns. My Monson guns seem fine. It does not seem to affect the function on the gun but I have 3 other Palmer large frames that are doing it. Not all the time it locks up half the time but if you play with it it does let you do it. I have two brand new Palmers and they are fine the cylinder locks up fine and will not rotate backwards if you play with it. I may send Eric Wesson a message to see if he knows anything about this problem. Now it may be that it was just a problem with old grease and dirt and this had nothing to do with the crane lock and when he took the gun apart and cleaned it up that fixed the problem. I wonder if another member has one doing the same thing and also knows how to take a large frame apart could open it up and see if the crane lock is broken!
