I understand that EKW barrels are to be 12" to 1" instead of the older Dan Wesson 16" to 1". Does anyone know the reason for the change and what will that do shooting accuracy. Also do they plan to offer other styles of shrouds later. The new one looks very nice but a little heavy looking for my taste.

The reason for the change is that the original DW 1:16 barrels would not stabilize heavier bullets.  Later in DW production they changed to a 1:12 twist and solved their problems.

At one time I had a link to a great article on it.. I dont know if I posted the link or the contents on here.

As best i can recall: ( and speaking only to the .357/.38spl)

Given that commonly .38spl wadcutter is 158gr going 750 - 850 FPS, is a much differnt animal than a .357 125gr moving at 1200 - 1400 fps.

The article said that the longer heavier bullet, would be better served by the higher speed ( fast twist) barrel while the lighter, shorter bullet would be best with the 1/14  to 1/16 twist rate. The article did not say WHY this is so, only that it was.

My favorite rounds are the .38spl 158gr dewc or the swc at 750 fps. Its slow, very little recoil, doesnt seem to foul as badly and is extremely accurate.  Most of my .357 are "hot" loads which "crack" when fired. You can tell they are a very fast round. Fun, but not as comfortable to shoot, slow to recover for the next shot.. and so on. At this point I do not think I am good enough ( nor am I using a bench) to actually benefit from the fast twist barrel, per se', but I am simply banking that it does not reduce accuracy, and if my abilty moves up, the capacity to be accurate is already there. I have shot in several competitions, and while my scores are pathetic, its not due to lack of accuracy, indeed even the very good shooters are impressed with my accuracy.

Lastly, one of the things I am consideirng asking EWK for is an 8" or even 10" BA drilled/tapped  with a fast twist. I then want to use a scope and 170 - 200gr .357 for hunting hogs, maybe even try for a deer.  A 170gr bullet has to be very long and of course is very heavy for the caliber.  I do have my original pack set which includes the 8", but I prefer not to mar it up with a scope, thus my hope placed with Eric.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

Good question BT, when did the twist rate change? Monson? Norwich? Model 14 to 15?

Pretty significant change. It would be a good factoid to know on the beloved Dans.

I'll have to dig out some e-mails to see if I have any relevant data for the twist change.  The majority of the barrels are the 1:16.  I've had a LOT of DW's, and I only have a few that had the 1:12 twist.  I think one of them just sold to a DWF memmber Laugh.

You can easily identify the fast twist barrels when you look down one.

My Palmer Action Cup has a 1:12 twist barrel which is original to the pistol as far as I know.
