Seems to be a lot of interest in loading the 357SM lately, and tonight I bought some ammo that sparked a question 🙂 How much does it cost to reload 357SM? I just purchased some reloads... 240 loaded 357SM shells and 50 empties for $100 -- Not bad !!! (41 cents a round if I did my math right?)
Let's make this thread all load data for the 357SM and maybe we can pin it to the top if it is worthy.
Here is the load data from what I bought tonight... (marked once fired brass 8/15/92)
357 Max
215 gr SWC w/gas check
18.0 gr IMR 4227
CCI 450
*** as always, consult a loading manual and use reloads at your own risk***

Has anyone ever tried to build a load around any 200 and the 220 grain rifle bullets for a revolver, I have seen the data for contender's and mostly in rifle, but there OAL will never do it in a revolver, and of course shrinking it down just begs for pressure. Anybody tried one? or both?
I'm working on the 200 gr now but in the 375 SM., so it won't do any good for the 357SM.
but will list it just in case. started with 375 winchester ww case sized down to 1.605" length, cci lr primers, sierra 2900 bullets at 200gr flat point, have IMR 4227 powder with final weights of 22.5 ,23,23.5 and 24grs hope to shoot for effect this week and will respond with results and best load and signs of pressure if requested. the OCL is 2.115"
the loadings I've had fo the 357SM are in the 180 gr class with the hornady hp/xtp. I have not tried any thing heaver in the 357SM

I have tried them in my 740-V8S. It is an older one, 1986, and has the 1:18.75" twist. Some of the IHMSA guys said the 200 grain Hornady Spire Point worked great in SOME of the then current 740's but mine was only ok. I think it was marginally unstabilized.
However, it DID work with the 200 grain Hornady Round Nose SP. Accuracy was a lot better, but there were crimping issues...the bullet had to be crimped on the ogive, and there were variations in crimp strength there. I solved the problem by cutting down Federal nickle cases to 1.483", which put the case mouth at the cannelure using the same OAL length as before. A Redding Profile Crimp die was used.
All this was back in the days of getting maximum knockdown power on the rams at 200 meters. This load was a bit slower than the traditional Speer TMJ 200 grainers, but it retained better velocity at 200 meters due to the better ballistic coefficient of the rifle bullet.
I know, cutting down those nice cases I did 50 at the time, brass was easily obtained and then whenever I had regular-length cases develop neck splits, I just trimmed them back to this length and got a lot of use out of them, instead of having to discard them.
