I got this barrel on GB it said ready to re blue only had 2 photos 1 of each side. When I got it someone had taken a wheel to the whole thing
buffed off all the matte finish on the rib ,end and top of the barrel. big deep scratches and pits. I was pretty disappointed to say the least.
A fellow let me use his shop and polish tape and bead blast the rib ends and top of the barrel. Just finished the bluing today.
It turned out pretty good now I am happier.

Mark- Really nice work!
Could you help us out and tell us more about your prep and bluing procedures?
I'm thinking that more than a few people here would like to know.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Sure used green 600 grit putty on a cotton wheel until it was like chrome. Then I took black gorilla Tape to mask off the top of the barrel, so the rib top 1/8 inch of the shroud and the front where the only thing showing. Then I bead blasted with the smallest glass beads to be had. The tanks where old metal troughs. one with a degreaser one with water and 1 with brownells bluing salts. heated up the degreaser to about 200 degrees.
same with the water. Waited until the salts was at 280 degrees to 290 put in the shroud with an attached wire through the sight screw hole.
just kept taking it in and out to watch about when it started to turn. Took about 20 minutes to start. In a around 10 minutes later it was the color I liked took it out put it in the 200 degree water for a few, washed it in cold water and oiled it up super heavy. Just wiped it clean and Its like a new shroud. Putting leupold clamp rings on it and a leupold m8 2x eer scope when I can find one that is a fair price
My eye sight is not as good as it used to be way out there so can't wait to scope it up for my 15-2.
Steve I Hope that was not to wordy of a description.

great hot blue job.
questions, at 600 grit polish and wheel did it come out as a satin finish?
Cotton wheel, soft or hard?
Did you go after the scratches and pits first with wet and dry paper?
Any filing?
Endeavor to persevere,
Press on regardless.

The first wheel was a harder one finished it off with a softer wheel. It turned out pretty high polish. Oh I forgot I first used a red polish paste for the bigger spots.
one of the pit groups I got out with a fine file, it was on the flat lower part of the shroud. the other ones I just buffed as good as I could, they were
on the rounded part of the shroud and the more I messed with them the worse they seemed to get they were deep. So I got them where I could live with them and quit.
Wish I would have worked on the top of the shroud a little more their were some small pits there. I thought once bead blasted and blued they would not show but if the light is right you can still see them.
But overall with the way this looked when I got it, I am very pleased.
Thanks Zoommb
