Very unusual. My guess on this is that someone wanted to make his own grip, and rather than inlet a piece of wood, he built a plastic "tube" of the right dimensions to enclose the tang, then fitted the wood to the tube for shaping and finishing.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I am really struggling with this one. It's possible, but I just can't fathom that this grip was engineered and fabricated as a one-off, home project. Take a look at the two half-round undercuts at the base of the frame on each side of the tang (after all this time I never even noticed they were there before). Now take a look at the plastic grip insert. The top is molded rounded to fit right in those undercuts. The craftsmanship on this grip makes be believe that it was a production piece, but since not one other grip has turned up previously I struggle with that theory also.
The grip came in one of the Norwich Pistol Packs and I asked Bob Serva about it. It wasn't one of his and he hasn't seen one like it either. My next step is to try to track down the original owner and try to get the story!
