I got a new to me 14-2 in and was going to adjust the barrel clearance, it looked awfully close to the cylinder, less than the .006 it calls for, and I can not get the barrel shroud nut loose, tried soaking it over night in penetrating oil, and also tried dipping the barrel end in boiling water to try and loosen it. Makes me wonder if they didn't lock tite the sucker. Any suggestions on how I can get that shroud nut off there? I kind of rounded off the notch in the nut, so took a dremel and squared it up so the wrench could get a good bite, but it's not budging.
Thanks

TMan -
You'll probably receive several methods here, but I can tell you the BEST way I have found, without question, is to clamp the barrel wrench down on the nut. I've had quite a few stuck barrel nuts and this method has worked effortlessly for me every time. Otherwise, you'll never get enough pressure applied to the wrench to hold it in the nut slots and you'll end up stripping the slots. You'll need either an EWK wrench or a steel wrench like it , and an adjustable clamp that will expand large enough to reach from the forcing cone to the muzzle with the wrench on the nut. Put a quarter between the forcing cone and the clamp to protect it. You can also apply some heat to the nut with a hair dryer after you have the wrench clamped in place to help loosen it up. I posted in another thread about the clamp – I'll see if I can find it. I purchased it at Lowes and cost about $10.
It was just like this Jorgensen bar clamp:

Thanks Harly, I've got the metal barrel wrench from my 15-2 pack. It has a metal bolt looking thing with two nubs hanging off to fit in the slots on the nut. It's in a little flat metal bar that has a hex key bolted on to it and I think another hex key coming off of one end. You thing that will work?
It wouldnt be a big deal, but you can't see any daylight between the barrel and the cylinder, and there should be a least a little bit of daylight showing through. I just want to get that adjusted, hope the barrel's not all jammed in there too, I did see the pictures on how to get a stuck barrel loose, so may have to use that.
Thanks for the info!!!

Tman- For what it's worth, get the EWK wrench, and follow the advice to clamp it down so it can't slip out of the nut, especially since the nut got a little rounded out once.
Soak it in oil, prop it upright with some oil around the nut, apply gentle heat with a hair dryer. With the (padded) barrel firmly secured in a vise, try placing the wrench on the nut and giving the wrench a sharp rap with a hammer straight back toward the cylinder to maybe break corrosion built up on the barrel nut threads.
Patience always pays off with this problem.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Quick temperature changes can help, get it hair dryer hot then spray
with the cannned air spray that you use on the keyboards, use the can air
upside down so you spray the cold liquid from the can . Try that a few
times between heat and cold and it should come off easily.

I finally did get that nut off. It took a hammer and a punch to get it moving, then it came right off with the shroud nut tool. I think I'm going to order a new barrel for it from EWK when he gets his next batch done, I kinda boogered up the crown a little, when the dremel got away from me once while I was squaring up the notch in the shroud nut I had rounded off trying to get it loose, and the dremel put a light scratch inside the barrel. EWK has the barrels for 39.95 so that won't be too bad of a hit to my bank account. I did recrown the barrel with a brass nut and some lapping compound and put a little lapping compound on a patch and ran it across the scratch in the barrel with my variable speed drill to remove any burrs, so it will probably shoot ok, but think I'll go ahead and get the new barrel anyway.

There are half a dozen techniques to try with the average "stuck" barrel nut, it pays to try a variety of approaches, in multiple combinations, eventually it seems to work.
