After my "Average Joe" clean and new spring set I finally got to take my reworked 715 out for some range time. Ran a box of .38 through it while dialing the sights back in. Everything was flawless. Nice clean action, crisp trigger and hammer. Then I feed it some .357. First 6 no problems. Then problems. A couple of shots and it would jam and the whole action would lock. Pop the cylinder out then back in and same thing would happen. Tried two different lots of ammo and still having problems. Last time I pop out the cylinder and see this:
That's a live round that found it's way under the ejector. Being the rocket scientist that I am..... I figure something ain't exactly right.

What they said and clean the cylinder to get the carbon from the 38's gone. I have had the ejector pop by empties though never jumped over a live round! Set your gap and check each cylinder, I have found a couple mine are not true and will have one or two that are out so I set to them. Keep us posted!

A thought on the star jumping the case rim. I have had a few cases wind up under the extractor in the past but this is what I believe happens, at least most of the time. I open the cylinder and push the extractor rod to push the cases out and expect the cases to come straight out, then I realise one is under the star. I believe what happens is when the cases/ cartridges are almost out one or more tilt to the side and then the star bypasses them allowing the case/cartridge to fall back in the cylinder or even be pushed back in by the star. This probably happens if the gun is pointed towards the ground. If the gun is pointed up the cases will (probably) just fall out. Of course loose or worn parts will contribute to the problem but I believe a habit of point the muzzle up when extracting will eliminate MOST of this. Just my thoughts and there may be other things going on here so good luck and keep us in the loop.

It's not a 9mm. It's a Fiocchi 142 gr. .357 FMJTC. I shoot allot of Fiocchi in different calibers with no problems. In fact a box of Fiocchi .38 FMJTC went through it with no problems prior to the .357. I kinda know the difference between a 9mm for my auto-loader and a .357 for my revolver.

Just said it looks like a nine. I guess somewhere along the years of reloading I just missed it. The rim certainly does not look recesssed like the nine tho, could have mentioned that I guess, just curious on the brand and load. Good velocity stats.
Jumping mts does happen and all good info contributed already. Although when I had similar experiences, the case was all the way in the cylinder and I had to pry out with my finger nail. It's pretty evident that my has too much tolerence and just enough movement in the wrong direction although super subtile, is causing the star not to grab.
Is the case OD on the high on the Fiocchi on the high side compared to other brands? This may make a tighter fit which would contribute to the live cartridge sticking possibily.
I now automatically tilt up and extract and since have not had the problem reoccur. Haven't made the time to check into part replacement.
As mentioned, if you change out a part or figure out something, keep us posted!

Well after 2 trips to the range I've determined my 715 does not like the factory gap setting. Bear in mind, I've torn this thing down 3 times and installed a complete spring set. Everything is tight and polished and the action is great.
When I gap the cylinder using the feeler gauge supplied with my EWK barrel nut wrench, she locks up solid after a couple of rounds. BTW when I gap it, I gap every cylinder so if there are differences I'm always gaping to the tightest one.
When it locks up at the range, I back the barrel of slightly and no problems. I'm going to pick up a full set of feeler gauges and determine exactly what gap makes the old Dan happy.
I'm taking it with me next week for a 5 day hunting trip. I intend to whack a Texas hog with it. I'll let my old Mauser do the long range work on a deer or two.
mmmmmmm....wild pig.....yummy...

oh oh ... please let us know what you are going to use for the pig... I have created a batch of 180gr bone breakers for such an event .. if I ever get to go. Though I have to say, my 158gr JHP are sizzling fast .. no way they cant do tons of damage. PICTURES are a MUST!!!!
Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box
in that order.

I did a bit of resesrch and the most reccomended round was the Hornaday 158 gr XTP. I think a .357 wth a 6" barrel is borderline for pigs. I'd like to have an 8" or a .44. I'm taking the Dan as backup mostly. I walk with a cane so if I flush one it's easier to draw the pistol than unsling the rifle. Of course if one wanders by at a reasonable range from the blind......
I bet those 180gr loads are...well...a load!

Back from the S. TX hunting trip. Bad weather. No hog action...bummer. Saw and shot 2 small spikers, both with the Mauser at 100+ yards, a bit much for the old 715!
It was damn good to get the hell out of town.
