You are one LUCKY guy !! This could have had a tragic ending. I'm not sue happy, but I agree w/rwsem. This guy needs stopped in a bad way !!
I think those pics should be sent to your attorney to send to manufacturer. That's BS !! PTSD !!
Is the Dan gonna live ? Glad you are.
SIZE DOES MATTER

I just read this thread, very glad you were not injured. It is a shame to lose 2 good guns.
I've had a box of that ammo that I bought for my cartridge collection from Graf's in September 2007. Just last week, I had decided to shoot this stuff at the range out of my 740-V8s. I ran out of time and never got around to it. After reading this, that box is staying in my collection
You may have just saved me the same outcome.

IHMSA,
WoW. A critical person just joined the conversation. IHMSA80x80. You have some of the same manufacturer's Maximum ammo. A comparison could tell us a lot!
The gun shop where I purchased the max ammo first said they thought it came from Graf's.
Partner, is there any way you can pull a couple of bullets and weigh the powder. We could also really use a picture the cartridge, of the powder and of the pulled bullet before and after. Any measurements of the brass and bullet would also be helpful. That might tell us if the same powder, bullet, brass was used and in what quantity. Your ammo lot might be fine, but it would take more cajones than I carry to pull the trigger.
If you don't have a puller and a nice scale, I will pay for you to mail it to me. David Bradshaw, the engineer who worked with Ruger on the design and implementation of the Maximum, is reviewing all the pics and data for us. There is no one better anywhere on the planet for this task. If allowed, I will repost everything from Mr. Bradshaw.

There may have been sources other than Graf's, but I don't know.
I can pull the bullets and weigh the powder, no problem...been a reloader for 30 years. Since I decided after reading this thread that I wasn't going to shoot this ammo, I thought I would pull all the bullets and dump the powder and primers. Then I could use the brass and pulled bullets for some other guns I have. It will be at least a week before I can get to it though, got a pretty full plate. I'll post my measurements and pictures as soon as I can.
That flake powder has me pretty suspicious. I can't think of any flake powder being appropriate for a SuperMag case. Maybe 2400? But 24 grains is way more than any other powder types I have ever used, the most being 21 grains, and nothing I use is a compressed load. Alliant doesn't list any load data for that powder in a SuperMag either.

Exactly !

Thanks IHMSA.
I'm hoping you don't find what I found. I hate to see more of that lot out in the shooting world. I can't wait to see your pics and measurements.
As an aside, once I showed the pictures, I had some real pros tell me it looked like ball ammo. I included 2 pics to give everyone a chance to weigh in on what they thought it was.

The latest on the powder is that it is a flattened ball powder. Someone said that you can still see some balls that were not flattened. The best pictures and comparisons of the top powders I've seen are here

Side by side powder pics are awesome. The absolute best thread on identifying powder by visual.
Mr. David Bradshaw, the lead engineer on the Ruger 357 Maximum in 1980, has graciously consented to review the rounds in person and give us some knowlegable feedback. I will make certain he sees IHMSA's pics and data as well.

Update on Precision Cartridge ammo.
Pulled a couple of bullets today to see what mine were like. Interestingly, it looks like a very fine ball powder, not a flake powder like in previous pics. And it was not stuck in the brass, it flowed easily out of the case. I then weighed it and it came out to
25 grains
Ouch, that is way more than I have seen for any .357 Maximum load of ANY powder.
I then measured the brass and a couple of loaded rounds. All were normal. Neck diameters were .374-.375, base diameters were the same. Case lengths were 1.600 to 1.603". Bullet diameters were .356" and were seated properly with a good crimp.
To rainy to get any pictures today, I'll try to get some tomorrow.

Sorry guys, haven't been on for a few weeks. If anyone is still interested, I can take some pictures tomorrow. At least of the powder. The brass and primer look and mic normal, the bullet is a standard 180 grain Remington short jacket hollow point.
I have pulled all 50 of that box from Precision Cartridge. The bullets and brass will be recycled in one of my other SuperMags.

Will one of you two please post a pic of the "Precision Cartridge" ammo box, to help us other 357 Max owners identify this potentially defective ammunition ?
Also, what was the case headstamps. In the cylinder pics of the stuck case, it appears to be "JBA".
Ole Dog and I went to the range yesterday and shot my Model 40-6VH and both of us could not get this incident out of our minds, so didn't shoot much. The ammo was non-descriptively packaged in a plastic cartridge case, with no manufacturer on the label.
PLEASE ?
