First off, this is a continuation of the thread linked below because we went back and forth from a bum Pistol Pac deal to PRS stuff to custom Hogue grips, so I decided this is the proper place to focus on the grips without having to sift thru the other stuff.

If there’s interest and this thread grows, I (or one of the Mods) can add links here to more suppliers as you or I find them, for solid hardwood blanks and such.
My custom Terrain Camo grip is done and should be here soon. I already have the Rosewood Laminate grip that's a stock item, #57530.
(Pics below.)
Right now, 3/21/25, I’m waiting on the guy running the Hogue Pro Shop to get back to me with answers to your questions and mine.
So, more as it comes in.

I sent a message to Hogue and they got back to me. They will make grips out of your blank but it has to meet requirements. Also if it gets messed up your out the blank. also $25 to put a medallion in one of their grips. I am just going to buy grips from them and send 4 pairs of medallions and have them installed. One thing I forgot to ask is if they can put medallions in a large frame grip. If you look at their large frame grips the two sides are much different. I do not think you could install medallions that are uniform or on the same level on one side from another. Not sure how it would look. I think I will stick to 4 pairs of small frame grips and have 4 pairs of them done. They have enough of a selection I can buy 4 nice grips from them and have medallions installed! A nice stripe cap grip should do fine and a pair of the Lamo Camo grips I like the green color on nickel guns. Also a Pau Ferro all finger grove grips. I may spring the extra for one set of the Kingwood and a set of Rose Laminate all finger grove. Not sure if checkering is worth the extra $25 so will pass on the checkering! Hope they will look great i'm sure they will!

Hi, Stan.
That sounds really cool! You can see from my pics that their guys do fine work, so all of your grips with medallions should be as nice as you expect them to be.
Here’s something for you, brother. They sent pics of the 4 greenish Lamo Camo grips they had a month ago. I don’t know what is left. If you want one, tell them you want #1, #2, #3, or #4. (attached below)
Concerning the medallions on large frame grips, I added that to the questions I’m asking Mike, the Pro Shop guy. I sent a short email just now, so maybe hold off until he replies.
For everyone:
OK, I was waiting until I had all the answers before I posted anything, but when I first started inquiring about drop shipping my choice of a blank to Hogue, he sent an email about the material requirements. Basically, Hogue is playing CYA in case someone sends a chunk of crappy material:
“Hi,
I talked to our custom grip shop, it should not be a problem making your grip with customer supplied laminate wood.
Please note that customer supplied laminate wood is not guaranteed to result in a finished product due to a chance of failure. If the wood fails, there is no charge, and we will not reimburse the material cost. The wood needs to be 11" long, 3" wide, and 3" in height. The wood needs to be defect free with no splits, pitch pockets, voids, and pest free. (Bold is mine)
Custom grips are currently taking about 60-90 days to complete. We will need to place a credit card on file prior to starting the order, however, your card will not be processed until the day the product ships out.
Please advise if you have any questions.”
So that’s what Hogue has to say to cover their six. I know quite a bit about working metal and wood materials with CNC or other machines, and that is what I’d tell a customer.
Bottom line, IMNSHO the only way the material is gonna fail, setting someone back the price of their blank, is if it was no good in the first place. As long as you buy from Exotic Blanks or an equivalent hardwood supplier, you should be golden.
I’ll also add something he forgot: if it’s a hardwood blank, it needs to be dry, not wet / uncured. If you’ve ever worked with green wood, you know what a mess it can be. You can get shredded wheat stuff everywhere. Enough said.
So, with the blank specs and medallion inlay price ($25, BYO, thanks Stan!) resolved, here are the 4 questions we’re waiting for Hogue to answer:
- 2 different grips from one blank?
- Acceptable materials aside from lams and hardwoods?
- Pricing for each style of grip (adding stripe/cap and checkering should still be $25)?
- Large frame medallion placement?
I did a search for hardwood turning blanks, 3x3x11 or 12, and there are some that need to be dried / cured / seasoned first, so be aware of that.
(PLEASE don’t use Gulag - they are evil, they log your searches! DuckDuckGo and Brave do not.)
Laterz.
