Never happens in S/A mode & only every 3~4 cylinders in D/A mode. The pistol is a 15-2 & has been detail stripped & fully cleaned everywhere recently. The grip screw is fine & the hammer will hold at full cock in S/A mode. The problem was noticed first with the reloads using the 550 primers & the detail cleaning was in response to the problem.
Pencil test jumps a full length wooden pencil with rubber eraser about 3" vertically & seems consistent. The unfired primer definitely has less of a strike though, not a real shallow dimple, fairly substantial, but noticeably different from the fired rounds.
Could it be hard primers? I'm using CCI #550 magnum primers.

Yes they are reloads.
I don't think it is a seating issue though. I usually reload for a semi-auto rifle so I'm kind of over-precise with the fully seating of caps because of the risk of slam-fires in those actions. Also I've (infrequently) had a second strike fail to fire as well.
I set up the feed ram to "bind" a factory shell with the press in the primer seating position & then double-checked it as well. Based on both that & the fact that the primers are below flush when checked I think I'm GTG with the process.
I guess I'll get a box of different factory ammo & see if the problem goes away!
What are the magnum primers most preferred for use in the DW's? I believe I need mag primers to light H-110 reliably.

No doubt others will chime in but..... I had similar problem on both my Dans which gradually got worse over time. Stumbled on replacement spring kits - Midway I think - and replaced every spring included included in the kit. Now both guns shoot like they just left the factory!

This cannot be emphasized enough! Unless you know that the springs have been replaced with new, good quality springs, consider this as your next (after a thorough internal cleaning) troubleshooting step. In a 30 year old gun there are enough variables of wear, manufacturing tolerances, etc. that a marginal spring can introduce an infrequent but recurring problem like light strikes.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I've used the springs from EWK and have had great success.
I stopped using the primer seater on my progressive press, I like the hand type much better. I went from a few primer related problems to zero. I use a universal deprimming tool, put them in the brass polisher, prime the case and have blocks of primed brass ready to go.

I just did a total strip down & clean, that didn't seem to make much difference to the problem.
Replacement springs make sense, but is there somewhere where I can get standard or stronger ones? Most of the ones I've found are lighter & I don't have trigger problems I have hammer problems. Logically don't I need a stronger spring to get more force from the hammer ?

Haven't checked lately but try EWK, Midway, and Brownell's. Factory weight would be my first choice but don't be afraid of something slightly light. Your current springs may be "tired" to the point light springs are still more powerful. Remember, your hammer spring is likely more of a problem than the trigger?

Available from EWK (I think the Brownells ones are EWK), Wolff, DW/CZ. I have bought mine from DW/CZ, but that was before Eric had them.

I know this is an old thread, but I thought as I've resolved the problem it might be helpful to anyone else to post the answer to the problem.
It was the CCI #550 primers, not anything to do with the revolver, or its springs.
I picked up several boxes of assorted ammo that did not have silver-colored primers, presumably they were Remington or Federal.
Every single round fire in both single & double action but as soon as I switched back to the loads with the CCI #550 primers the problem came back.
I'll use up those I have as target loads & the 158 Gr semi wadcutters I had leading problems with, but in a reduced target only load where I only fire S/A anyway.

Thanks for posting your results. I have been using CCI almost exclusively for my reloads. It's probably my own fault, because I like the way CCI markets their primers...using various numbers instead of merely "large pistol/small pistol", etc.
But I will have to give your idea a try, for a finicky SA gun I have. Thanks for the tip.

BTW I am now convinced that my 15-2 doing the same thing as here has a worn firing pin. I am looking to have it either tweaked a bit ( turn the current pin on a lathe, or replace with new).
Yeah, I just finished off 2K of Tulammo small pistol primers. I swear my Dillion hated them, but the pistols mostly shot them fine. To me they were dimensionally more shallow than the CCI or Remington.

I'm curious, how did you decide that?
For now I'm relegating both the #550 primers & the 158 Gr SWC's loaded with Unique to the "practice & single-action-only target" role, but I'd really like to come up with a "one does it all" load.
As a footnote I backed the charge weight off a bit more to 5.3 Gr of unique & the leading went away. Velocities are in the 1,000 FPS @ 10 feet range though, a bit lower than I was trying for. Not a huge problem as I have an alternate load with H-110 & Hornady XTP 125 grainers for all else.
