I rekindled an old project recently. It all started with Bruce gifting me a bunch of 414 ET Gates brass many moons ago. As most of you know I only have Monson era revolvers, so the 414 SM caliber never really fit in (other than the two known prototypes), and I sold the AGS to a member to fund a rifle build. So, there I was: a bunch of brass, a long-ago sourced cylinder, an extra 740 (hoarder, I know), an extra 10" 41 mag barrel (again, I know) and a desire to build firearms (and some skill but not a lot). I measured the .410 barrel and determined there was enough meat to be able to cut, cone, and re-thread to fit the model 740 frame. I spent a few hours fitting the cylinder to the frame (and frame to the cylinder) and then a few more getting the bolt and hand to time correctly on both cylinders. Monday, the cylinder and barrel go to an applicator for a black cerakote finish, so there will be no mixing a 414 cylinder with a .357 barrel installed. And of course, there's the finishing touches that I'll add during final assembly.

Finished the Frankenwesson .357/414 Supermag.
To ensure I had the timing correct, I thought I'd load a squib round with no powder, only a magnum primer. To my surprise, I didn't even hear the primer go off, so I kept trying to fire it two more times. I thought the primer was bad, but it wasn't as evident by the soot on the bottom of the bullet. Seems with the volume of air in the case and the bullet seated, you don't hear the primer pop...
Soo... I downloaded to 3gr, 1gr, and 0.5 gr. of Lil Gun, packed in place with a bit of cotton. Don't do that unless you're confident in your reloading abilities, you can detonate the cartridge! Anyway, I used 3 gr to start and caught it in some wadded up t-shirts. Then, for fun, I wanted to see how low I could go until I got a bullet stuck in the barrel. .05 drove the bullet about 2 inches into the barrel, in case you wanted to know.
Now, I think I'm going to run an accuracy test; no forcing cone vs forcing cone. My reamer is delayed, so while I'm waiting- why not?
