I received today the Model 14-1 I won on a GB auction. It's a character gun (and maybe a little too nice to be called a beater). It feels like it would be fun to shoot but it has a problem. It won't reliably rotate the cylinder in double action mode when using quick trigger pulls. The failure is very noticeable if you watch for it. Out of every six pulls, it will fail at least once and sometimes as many as three times. Single action and slow trigger pull double action is fine. Lockup is acceptable but not great.
The seller is sending me a return shipping label on Thursday. (The guy handling their GB sales is out tomorrow.)
But the thought just occurred to me, the gun is pretty dirty especially the star. I'm tempted to give it a good cleaning to see if the dirt is the problem.
Anybody else have any ideas?
Thanks.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reference but my problem occurs with fast trigger pulls. (My 740 had the slow pull problem and work on the hand was needed.) When I watch the hand engage I can actually see the times it doesn't rotate the cylinder. At those times it looks like the hand isn't engaging the star. It happens too fast to be certain but those times I can easily see the hand.
There seems to be a lot of play in the crane. The timing problem appears to be mitigated when I stabilize the crane by pressing on it but it is still there some. After trying it some more, I don't think it is the star because the failure to fully rotate happens on different chambers.
This poor gun has really been ignored. In better light I can see a fair amount of light surface rust. It gives the gun a pleasant patina but it is time to stop that progression. The barrel nut seems to be frozen. I've got the gun upright in a vice and am soaking it with a penetrating oil.
I hope I can this worked out. I'd really like to keep the gun.

If the pistol is very dirty or gummy inside, pull the sideplate off, maybe the hand is sticking to the sideplate at times due to dirt or old gummy lube. Just a thought. If it was mine I would give it a good cleaning and very light lube inside and see if things improve. It still looks to me like a keeper, I think you can get it working properly.

All sounds like good advice. My thought was to check with the seller. As if he has agreed to take it back he may not want you messing with it, or he may prefer you try and fix the issue, but I would run it by him first before you void the return "agreement" good luck and keep up informed.

This does sound like lack of care! Clean it up and see what it does! Before getting to wild with the nut shoot it a ew times see if that will shake it loose! Keep us posted!!
Heating up that barrel may be just enough to get a good barrel wrench to loosen the nut, and the most fun way to heat up the barrel is shoot it

Thanks LB. I spoke with the seller this morning. I can open the gun up but if I damage it, I'll get a reduced refund.
Thanks Shoot. I'll check the sideplate screws tonight to see if they are loose and that I can get them off. (I'm guessing they are frozen also but maybe I'll get lucky.)
Thanks LW, when I get the sideplate off, I'm expecting to find it either gummed up or very dry. As I said something with the hand movement is visibly different when the cylinder doesn't fully rotate. There was a lot of caked dirt under the grip. I'm probably going to keep this gun. It feels really good in the hand. It just needs some TLC.
Thanks Dave and Steve. Shooting it sounds like a great way to heat the barrel. Well at least a lot more enjoyable than using a heat gun. Well it wont' do that right now. I'll have to settle for .

Progress! It's not right yet but it is better. (It's late tonight so pics will come tomorrow night.)
Removing the side plate revealed pooled oil, caked dirt and surface rust. At this point, I just removed the internals, wiped them off, cleaned them quickly with Brakleen and re-installed them with just a smidgeon of oil. Because of the stuck barrel nut, I couldn't remove the crane and cylinder. (Correct me if I'm wrong but I think I have to remove the shroud on pork to remove the crane.) It was a little better but still pretty bad on the failure to rotate. From the grinds and burrs on the inside, this one will definitely benefit from an Average Joe tune-up ( Shoot)
Then I noticed there was a lot of oil on the ejector rod so I started wiping that off. After several tries, the oil kept re-appearing every time I pushed the rod I tried spraying some Brakleen through the cylinder down the rod. I really need to get the cylinder off and give the rod a proper cleaning but that helped.
And then I noticed what I suspect is the telling clue. There is a rust patch around a shiny rub spot revealing the ejector rod rubbing the shroud. The rod doesn't appear to be bent so I'm guessing there is just enough play in the crane that it rubs at times and that rub provides just enough friction to keep the cylinder from fully rotating. Anyway I rubbed that area with a cloth wrapped allen wrench and the rotate failure went down dramatically. Now it is 1 in 24 pulls versus 3 of 6 when I first got it.
It's late and I need to get to bed. I'll go at it again tomorrow. I'll try to figure out a way to get a small piece of sandpaper to that spot. I'm definitely keeping this gun.
