Hey gents,

I would like to add a fiber optic from sight to my 14-2 because the front blade is just too plain to be useful to me and I don't see how I would remove it other than drilling out the retaining pin on the right side of the shroud. I read in a previous thread that an allen screw needs to be loosened, but I don't see one to mess with. Does anyone have any alternative to drilling the pin out? And if I do get it out can I use the sights from EWK? Front-Sight-Pin.jpgImage Enlarger

No Allen screw on the 14-2 front sight.  You can drift the pin out and replace with a FO sight but a few things: You will need to drill a hole in the FO sight to line up with the hole in the shroud for re-assembly. And second, the POA will change due to the difference in front sight height.

Lastly- I dab a bit of fluorescent green, or a white model paint on many of my blackened front sights.  It helps my aging eyes...  Testors paint has a ton of colors.  Regards, Ron

+1 on rwsem's advice - don't drill it!  Use a 1/16 pin punch and it will pop right out.  If you do replace it, I would strongly advise drilling the new sight on a drill press.  Put the sight in the slot first and make a mark on the sight through the center of the hole in the shroud.  Make a dimple on the mark so you can get the drill started in the exact same spot, and drill it on a drill press.  It is impossible to drill a straight hole with a hand-held drill.

You might want to try this first. I've done this with a number of on non Dan firearms, especially my beloved old Ruger MkII, and you will be amazed at the difference  it makes. In fact, on the Ruger, I didn't have any paint handy do I used some whiteout on the front blade. That was about 10 years ago and that stuff is still bright white!

To the paranoid people who check behind shower curtains for murderers:

if you find one...what's your plan?

I put one of EWK's FO front sights on my 14-2. I could not get the original sight pin to budge so I had a gunsmith drill it out. The EWK sights are too tall for the fixed rear sight so I ground it down with a Dremel until my POA was where it suited me. I left it a little tall to start out then took it to the range, shot a group then brought it back home and shortened the sight a little more until it shot dead center. I scotched taped the sight on the barrel for testing. Then after I was happy with the height I cold blued the edges, and drilled for a new pin on a drill press. Used a split pin to attach it which is easier to drift back out if need be.

If I recall I actually filed one side of the sight a bit and made a small .010" shim on one side to adjust left/right.

Thanks for the input everyone. I plan on trying the paint first, but this is going to be my project/dream revolver for now so I may upgrade the front sight eventually. Glad to see that it is possible, thanks Lonwolf! Definitely more involved than I can do at this point. I forgot to mention that the retaining pin is only visible on the right and there is no way to punch it out that I can see so it looks like a drill would be necessary.
