Hello, I have acquired a couple model 15 parts. Interesting that I got a decent deal, due to the parts being capital U Ugly! Looked scratched, dented and neglected, but, No detectable rust/pitting. My question is, was there some kind of clear coat applied at the Factory, ever??? This seems to have a clear coating on the various parts. I will try to get a Picture, certainly if I find that I can clean some of this up a bit!!

Thanks for taking the Time.

Edit for pictures, best I can do sorry.

Pic one shows what appears to be a Blemish, but in pic2, you can maybe if ya Squint, see it is a coating that I removed with my Thumbnail as seen in pic 3.

Never been exposed to such a thing...In Firearms anyway..

Well Darnnit...I guess maybe I not been here enough to post Pictures...Or, I don't know the Secret??

Welp...Been studying this ...and Maybe...Just Maybe. The model 14's were more of a Matt Finish, as I hear. Wondering if this stuff I have is for a 14, and the "coating" is to give it that matt Finish?? Far fetched...But...I got nuthin else, except ??? A Previous owner, for some reason shot the gun with a pretty darn expensive, and Durable Clear!!!

Edit: If I could remember/find, my old Forum Info, it would help, as I could at least provide Pictures...to me this is Interesting stuff!

Supposedly, blueing in combination with oil is a long lasting finish to prevent rusting.  Rust prevention with blueing definitely requires regular oiling tho!

Are we thinking the oil took that "coating" off, partially?? Appears like Neglect and/or Abuse to my eye...Yet maybe the coating did it's job.. as once removed the parts look better than most firearms this age that have been Used!

Again If I could identify what it was...I may consider putting some on this Revolver, or another...thinking it may have protected it...as Intended

DuraCoat is generally a colored application but they also have clear.  It looked to me in the first set of pics that what you peeled off exposed bare metal.  That apparently isn't the case.  Maybe someone just shot it with some clear lacquer of some other paint? Regardless, it wasn't a factory application.

It looked like bare metal under the peeled coating to me too.

@rwsem   Apologies for poor photography skill, or lack of Skills.

The blue is quite nice under the "coating" Which I would certainly think was Not Factory!

It did a decent job of protecting the darn original Blue, to the point there was hardly a Turn Line under the stuff on the Cylinder, Which looked originally like a Lost Cause!

How do you peel it off?  Just by using a fingernail?  Or something more aggressive like 0000 super fine steel wool?

Oh...being lazy, I use Both...the 0000 wool mostly does the trick...some spots need fingernail...but, I'm fast running out of Fingernails!!!!

Ed's Red soaked into steel wool..

Edit; to Note, I rarely use "naked" steel wool, except on stubborn or flakey Rust. Learned from milsurps. Eds Red pretty much avoids "scratching", If Quality Steel Wool, true 0000, is used! Well Soaked = Messy!!!

Ooooo! Oooooo!   Ooooo!   Mr. Kotter, I think I know!

It's Val-Oil!

Did the coating/shell that flaked off have an amber color?

I used it on my old shotguns as a teen.

Never heard of Val-Oil before. Interesting.

Me either. But it does make sense, judging from the description from Racepres. I wonder if paint thinner or brake cleaner would take it off without all the elbow grease?

^^^ Prolly should have tried...But, The finish was so nice under it...I was skeert to mar it with Chemicals!!! My story, I'm stickin to it!! Doubt that brake parts cleaner would hurt anything, and may have made life a bit easier!!!
