Guys, been away for a long time. Anyway, discovered a problem with my Monson M44-6HV, the cylinder-throats are averaging .426. This has to be increasing my pressure. does anybody know what the correct Throat-diameter should be and how much it runs to have it corrected?

.426 is OK. In a revolver you always want the cylinder throats a bit smaller than the bore. (Edit- I'm backwards; it's only ok if your bore is tighter, sorry) As long as all are the same-you shouldn't have problems with consistency. If you're shooting extremely hard bullets, you may have problems with obturation in the barrel and end up with some leading issues (if shooting cast). I'll look tonight when I get home to see what mine run. Make sure you're using a pin gauge or inside micrometer; calipers just aren't accurate enough.

I have had two revolvers over the years that I actually had to get reamed to solve this problem. I don't remember the cost, but it solved the problem. It does happen every now and then I suppose that a few firearms get passed around and end up with an owner that spends the effort to make the repair. I had JD Jones in Ohio do one and Keith at CZ did the other,

Greetings
If shooting cast I would want my throats no less than groove and +.001 would be ideal. Have several Ruger BH's in 45 Colt that had too small throats and it was mediocre in the accuracy department. Opened the throats to +.0015 beyond the groove and it made 5 inch groups at 25 yards turn into cloverleafs.
There just is no way an undersize bullet skidding down a barrel from side to side is going to give optimum accuracy. And yes.. shooting a .429 - .430 jacketed bullet in .426 + throats will give higher pressures in the cylinders.
Bunches of Smith's out there do this service. Numerous fellers at Castboolits have used Cylindersmith with good results.

I just checked my notes, my 744 and 44 both measure .429 in the throats. Cylindersmith does do good work and he's a no BS fella. http://www.cylindersmith.com/
Let us know what happens...

Above is an old thread from CB. You can get a reamer from Brownells:
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=7700/Product/REVOLVER-CYLINDER-THROATING-REAMER
You could send the cylinder to Keith and I'm sure he'd take care of it for you as well.
Finally, some folks use Emory cloth (320 and 400 grit) in a split rod dowel.

Ron

Well, so far I talked with Cylinder&Slide and SSK. C&S wants $108.00 plus shipping and can't gaurantee return in less than four months.
JD at SSK wants $175.00 to do it. He has to buy a reamer and evidently I'm going to pay for it. Don't think so.
Curious, sent Keith an E-mail last week and he hasn't answered yet.

Check out Dave Manson's throaters on pg 7.:

If you're going to pay for the reamer, you may as well own it too...

Maybe a made on Monday gun?? Not indicative of quality though and not certain what the QA checks were when yours was manufactured. Many manufacturers have had issues with over sized throats, although this is the first under sized instance I've run across.
FWIW, all of my Dans (21 of them) measure within .001" of SAAMI and the maximum difference between throats on the same cylinder is .001".
By chance, did you send him the whole gun? I wonder what your bore and groove measurements are?
Best Regards,
Ron
