Hi:
If it is a DW grip, with the DW logo on the emblem, there is a pin on the back of the emblem which protrudes into the wood. It is not always visible from the top but it is there and can be pressed with the short end of an allen wrench to get it out.
Every one of my large frame DW made grips had the medal in crooked when I bought the guns. They are all straight now. It's easier than it would seem.

That's funny, as I have never seen a grip which the medallion stud hole didn't come through to the inside but this is the second time in about two weeks I have heard if it. Is it a standard DW grip? Perhaps a picture for us to see. Just a thought, if the medallion is like all others I have seen then the stud is only a 1/16 or so from coming through to the inside. Maybe you could use something like a awl or ice pick bent at 90 degrees and push the medallion out by kentucky windage as to where the stud should be. I suppose it is always possible at some point DW used a different type of medallion which glued in or something like that. No way to be sure until the medallion is out. I wish you luck and would love to know what you find.

Thank you for the help and advice. It is an original DW large frame grip, and you are right, there is a hole for the emblem stud but it wasn't visible. The hole was right on the edge of the front, solid part inside the grip. I took your great advice and used a right angle pick to poke through the wood from the back side and pop the emblem out. It wasn't until the emblems were out that I could actually see where the stud hole was. Now I know where to look for it.
I refinished a couple smaller frame grips recently (the emblem stud holes were clearly visible) by stripping off the old finish with a chemical varnish stripper and toothbrush, lightly sanding with 1k grit, and finishing off with Minwax "Wipe-On" Poly clear satin. I applied aobut 8 coats of poly, again lightly sanding any dust particles between coats. I'm not a woodwoorker by any means, but I can say the refinish looks better than the original factory finish! The walnut is more visible through the finish now and looks great. The original finish may have had some stain in it that hides the grain of the walnut.
Anyway, thanks again for the help and advice. A great group of guys (and girls) on this forum.
