I'm getting started on a new project, a 715 4VH. The plans for this one are:

1) See how far I can increase the sparkle and shine of the factory stainless with reasonable DIY techniques

2) The SHOOT/Average Joe tuneup, with special attention to smoothing the DA/SA action

3) A new grip, maybe something really exotic from Hogue with some colored laminates, etc.

4) I'd like to find a way to do a really special front sight, I think a gold bead would be awesome, not sure yet how to get it done

Baseline data for this one: 3 lb 11 oz SA trigger pull, 25 yard handheld rested SA groups average 2.75". Data is "as bought", with a basic cleaning only

Just as a quick FYI, here's photos of before and after about 5 minutes of polishing on the shroud

First pass with Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish, no wax yet

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Looks like a fine foundation to start with, looking forward to your progress.occasion

Geminiman may be able to do a front sight for ya. I've dropped the gold bead idea & I think he's mulling it over.Wink

This makes me want to find a project gun!  I like the gold bead front sight idea.  If Geminiman decides to make one I'm in for at least one!

I'm going to spend a little more time cleaning up surface scratches, dents and dings before final polish. I am not thinking that I'll get to the "pop" of chrome, I do want to see where I can get with sanding, polishing, and wax with a reasonable amount of DIY work.

I'm all about DIY when it comes to guns--and almost everything else also Laugh.  I have a 686 I've been thinking about polishing up--I look forward to your results.

Steve,

Good luck on your project!GoodLuck

How do you plan to remove the surface scratches and blemishes without creating extra polishing work on the  back end?  You refer to sanding.  Are you actually going to use a sanding medium like sand paper, or something else?  If so, what grit...3,000 - 5,000 grit?
